linkerbink Posted August 31, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2011 We will be cruising to Halifax and St. John in October. Does anyone know of any locations within walking distance of the port (cafes, McDonald's, etc.) in either city that offers free wifi?

linkerbink Posted August 31, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted August 31, 2011 Thanks! I don't know how you found that thread, because I did all sorts of different searches and always came up with zero! This was just what I was looking for.
LiftLockCouple Posted August 31, 2011 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2011 I knew it was there and searched on one of the regular contributors from Saint John, so I guess you could say "inside knowledge". Cheers

linkerbink Posted September 1, 2011 Author #8 Share Posted September 1, 2011 You are more than welcome! We are sailing this itinerary in 16 days, including Portland, Maine and Boston. This has been part of my research; hope you all have a wonderful cruise! We (my sister and I) leave in 36 days. Our younger sister lives in Portland, so we will be spending the day with her, then she will drive up to Bar Harbor and meet us the next day as well, so those two days will be spent with her. St. John and Halifax we will be on our own so I've been doing research as well. We don't plan to do any excursions, we just want to wander around and get a feel for the towns. Are you planning to do a review after your cruise? If so, I'll watch for it!
Rare bnickle Posted September 1, 2011 #9 Share Posted September 1, 2011 Going to try to do the review thing. We are going to wing it in Saint John too. We have a driver hired for the morning in Halifax, with Peggys Cove and the Citadel being the main things.
donaldsc Posted September 1, 2011 #10 Share Posted September 1, 2011 We will be cruising to Halifax and St. John in October. Does anyone know of any locations within walking distance of the port (cafes, McDonald's, etc.) in either city that offers free wifi? Try typing "Free Wifi halifax canada" into Google. You would then have found the answer to your question by yourself. DON
LiftLockCouple Posted September 1, 2011 #11 Share Posted September 1, 2011 bnickle and linkerbink: you both mention doing some research. I assume you have found the thead by acey-sj about Saint John, if you haven't, you will find it still on page one on this board. It is a very useful thread. Here is a link to some of the pictures I took in the city this summer. http://s1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc514/havtago/Saint%20John%20NB%202011/
CasaSmith Posted September 1, 2011 #12 Share Posted September 1, 2011 Liftlockcouple, Great pictures. I have been to Saint John a few times and I have been to the Reversing Falls twice and never been to where you went to see them. The tour buses go to this place across from a plant, ugly view. This is a much nicer view.

LiftLockCouple Posted September 2, 2011 #15 Share Posted September 2, 2011 Liftlockcouple, Great pictures. I have been to Saint John a few times and I have been to the Reversing Falls twice and never been to where you went to see them. The tour buses go to this place across from a plant, ugly view. This is a much nicer view. You may be aware but for the benefit of the others I will point out that the "better " location is across the bridge from where the zipline and jetboats are. The Jetboat area is indeed across from a paper mill and much less attractive. Over the bridge there is a lovely small park as well which is at a higher elevation and gives a great view towards the harbour and downtown area. The name "Falls" is to me an overstatement, a good rapids at best and at slack tide a calm river but not a water falls. The observation deck down by the river on that side is a very nice vantage point. This fall I believe pedestrians might again be able to walk from the ship to the area. There has been lots of refurbishment happening on the large bridge over the harbour, this has closed the pathway for safety reasons but it might be open later this month or in October. One other interesting site for historians is the Loyalist cemetary within easy walking of the ship. These people fled the American revolution, since they remained loyal to the British crown and so were not welcome in the colonies. There are a couple of plaques with some of the story and many very old grave markers. There are other historical sites around the city as well. The museum in Brunswick Square tells the whole story very well. about the paper mill, Saint John is and has been for many, many years a industrial city. It has paper production and an oil refinery plus many other industrial installations. This is very good for the area since they are enjoying near full employment, no rust belt here. They welcome the cruise visitors as well to enjoy the eco-tourism of the Bay of Fundy and for historians interested in how and why the area was settled, in some cases visitors are looking for ancestors that settled in the area. You will notice lots of rock in the city which sent settlers inland to where there was good farmland and timber for them to start their families. All of that produce ended up back in Saint John harbour to be shipped to market in ships that may well have been built in Saint John using local timber. Interesting stuff, to me anyway....:) Unfortunately the paper mill doesn't add to the scenery but it is of course very important and has been there a long time. Enjoy your trip
Rare bnickle Posted September 2, 2011 #16 Share Posted September 2, 2011 Liftlockcouple, thanks for the info on Saint John. We are history enthusiasts and the Loyalist cemetary sounds really interesting. Really looking forward to our journey!
CasaSmith Posted September 2, 2011 #17 Share Posted September 2, 2011 Liftlockcouple, Thanks for the information, I have been to the cemetery and it was interesting. I agree the plant is ugly but a necessary thing to keep jobs and the economy alive. I love going to Saint John, the people are so nice and the town is very easy to get around and nice. I love the thing with the tide. Interesting when you get there in the morning and the gangway is on one floor and when you come back it is on another. Also, I love hearing the bagpipe play for us as the ship gets ready to leave. One of my favorite things in Saint John and Halifax.
