From the port of Civitecchia (sp ?) to Rome...it's a little more than an hour if there is no traffic...so a taxi could be a little pricey. We were there several years ago and it cost us $10. just for a short ride (~1 mile) from where the ship is docked just to the train station. From there we bought r/t train tix into Rome and got to various the various sights with a combination of walking and/the subways. I had done my 'research' prior to leaving home and had some places that I felt we really needed to see and I was there armed with some maps and such. We gave ourselves plenty of time to get back to the ship.

If you feel uncomfortable doing this...then for your peace of mind...consider a ship's excursion. You know best what your daughter might or might not be interested in...but a whole day of all 'historic' sites might be too much for a 9 year old.

You should post your questions on the 'ports' boards for more recent info than I have to offer.

Happy sailing!

Thank you so much after last post to you, checked out the port threads. Great help.Having problems with ship excursion cant seem to find a trip that includes inside the colosseum which of course is about the only thing my daughter really wants to visit.Im gonna try and check if you can pre book it and try and tie it in with our ship tour <maybe>.I still havent quite decided, but it is great fun checking it all out!!!!

Hi Shaz...don't know if you will be checking this thread anymore...but we were on HAL's Maasdam when we did the western Mediterranean cruise and from the ship's excursion groups that we came across here and there while in Rome...none of them got to explore the inside the Coliseum...they just sorta walked around the outside of it. We did pay to go in to see the interior...you can rent one of those 'talking wands' that explains a lot of what you are seeing. And while walking around in there...in your minds eye...you could see the gladitorial contests that took place there! The HAL Excursions desk did offer basic bus transportation into Rome (no escorted tour) from the ship ...but they only had limited seats available and we didn't sign up fast enough for that. Maybe your ship will offer that...I forgot where it dropped them off...but they then could explore on their own and then just get back to the meeting spot by a certain time to return to the ship. So if you didn't want a ship's 'escorted' tour...perhaps something like this would work for you. That way you could fit in a few of the sights you and your family really want to explore. One word of caution...if you use the subways (which wasn't that hard to figure out)...be very, very careful of pickpockets! My DH was almost a victim and one of our tablemates was victimized.

Again...enjoy the planning!

Hi Betty,Im going to contact RCCL and ask if they do such a trip, it sounds just what we need!!.I have visited Rome only for a day last year, here is a story for you. We had a trip with my husbands work,on our visit to the Trevi Fountain, we put a coin in the fountain requesting a return trip to Rome. Then we went to Naples and seen a ship docked and as we looked up at the aft we both said we'd love to try a cruise and have an Aft balcony suit. Well here we are with 12weeks to go ,going on a ship in a afte balcony JS and visiting Rome mmmmmmmmmmmmm its true what they say about the Trevi Fountain,I also promised myself we would get inside the Colosseum!!!!Listen to me going on, just wanted to share that story with you and give you a wee laugh all the way from <any chance of any sunshine Northern Ireland> thanks for all your help Betty

Hi Shaz...thanks for writing back...nice to know that some wishes do come true! And I'm glad that I was able to be of some help to you.

Have you been able to find out if RCCL offers just 'basic' transportation from the ship into Rome? How wonderful that you & your husband are able to share this trip with your daughter!

Wow...you're from Ireland?! Our son was there about 2 or 3 years ago and he found it a beautiful country! We have to get there one day ourselves!

Keep us posted about your planning!

Be well...

Hi Betty, Still no reply from RCCL. I guess unless you are buying something it takes longer for them to get back to you.

I see you've done quite a few cruises, we were thinking of Caribbean next year, have you tried any around the Caribbean or could you suggest any ship?

Bye for now

Hi Shaz...hope you had a good weekend. We had torrential rains here on Sat, and there are many places that are 'flooded' especially if their homes were located near rivers and creeks. Some places, the people could only get around if they had a boat.

From my listing of cruises...if it doesn't have a 'destination' listed next to the date (like Alaska etc) then it was a cruise to the Caribbean. We've been fortunate to have taken several cruises to the Caribbean. I'm sure that you'd enjoy visiting the Caribbean. The majority of Caribbean cruises leave from ports in Florida...maybe you'd like to combine a few days in Florida before or after your cruise since you are flying all the way from the Emerald Isle! First decide how long a cruise you want to take...then if you'd prefer an 'eastern' or 'western' Caribbean itinerary. Often the days 'southern' Caribbean cruises start out from San Juan, Puerto Rico...to allow you to start deeper into the Caribbean. If you take a 10+ days longer cruise from the Florida ports...then you could get a little deeper into the Caribbean too.

We've tried several cruise lines and have enjoyed all of our cruises...some a little more than others...but our favorite line is Holland Amercia. But my motto is 'just about any cruise is better than no cruise'!

Have you heard anything from RCCL yet? Perhaps they have shore excursion offerings listed on their website? Besides going into Rome...what other ports will you be visiting?

Be well...and hope to hear from you again!

I did a similar cruise on RCCI two years ago and RCCI did not offer transportation to Rome just to get you into the city. The cost of a taxi could well run you over $100USD just to get to the city center from the dock, one way, so that might be very expensive for you. RCCI did offer a really nice tour that uses a smaller van type bus that held only 15 passengers. It was much easier to get to the sights and see everything than if you're in a huge bus with 60 people.

Hi Betty,

Guess what ? still waiting reply. Oh I going to go off on one again. Never mind.! Good news, on checking about my Caribbean Cruise my TA was very helpful. He told me to take the train into Rome and he would check out the timetables for the trains and a route for us to take to catch all our sights and get us back to the ship on time.Mmmmmm I'm impressed. So we are nearly there!TA is still checking out the other cruise for us , thanks again for all your help Betty,

Bye for now
