sunshine220 Posted September 8, 2011 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2011 Hey fellow cruisers, Where do you plan on exchanging USD$ for Euros? Do you plan on using a credit card and ATMs in Barcelona? I hear the US, Airports and Banks in the US have a terrible exchange rate. Let me know! Diane
ddoc Posted September 8, 2011 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2011 In the past, I purchased some euros here in the US. When I got to Barcelona and other ports, I went to the ATM. With most machines, I got a good rate. I got caught in the Volacano erruption last year and had to get extra money out because we stayed 4 an extra days. It worked our well. I didn't have to worry about whether I had too much or not enough cash. I got it as I used it. Do not exchange your money in the airport or on the ship as the rates are poor. Also, keep in mind that your credit cards work, too and you get a good exchange rate there.
tiggerman101 Posted September 8, 2011 #3 Share Posted September 8, 2011 For both of my Europe cruises this year I exchanged money at my local AMEX office. The rates were good and I preferred to have it all done ahead of time (that way I budgeted out what I needed for tours, etc on a daily basis). I used my left over Euros to pay for the hotel we stayed at post cruise rather then go through the exchange process again. Many use ATMs though and have no problem. Even the ship staff will tell you not to do it on the ship. If you are in a real bind then there are exchange places on the street in just about every major port. They are easy to use. JimA49085 Posted September 8, 2011 #4 Share Posted September 8, 2011 I got some Euros from our local bank so I will have some when we arrive in Barcelona before our Sept 16 Magic cruise. After that , I will use the Bancomat (ATM) in each city as needed.
kicia Posted September 8, 2011 #5 Share Posted September 8, 2011 We use our credit card wherever possible. We did use an ATM a few times to get Euros and ATMs are everywhere. Don't exchange money on the ship. That is really expensive. The exchange rate is a little better now than it was in May and June. I didn't check your itinerary but if you're going to Dubrovnik they don't take Euros.
Rare chasinraynbowz Posted September 8, 2011 #6 Share Posted September 8, 2011 I am getting mine thru Wells Fargo. They only charge a $5 fee (if you don't have an account).
