US money in Canada question

Hi-I am going on a Canada/New England cruise in October. Has anyone ever been to Canada-or are from Canada-could I use American money in the following Canadian ports or do I need to exchange for Canadian money?-Halifaz,Sydney,Charlottetown,Quebec City,and St. John,New Brunswick. Especially near and around the port areas, retailers, restaurants, etc
