New oil spill penalties

THE penalty for the discharge of oil or oil

residues by ships in Australian waters has been

increased from $1 million to $11 million, due

to the introduction of changes to the

Navigation Act and Protection of the Seas Act.

The changes are designed to deter ships from

engaging in unsafe and irresponsible actions at

sea, particularly near sensitive marine

ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef.
