Canadian prepaid cell for Australia/Asia?

Any recommendations on a cell phone to purchase that I can use on a 58 days cruise through Australia/New Zealand/Southeast Asia?

I am looking for something that I can use to call home (Canada) maybe twice a week & for emergencies. I do not want to incur high costs/roaming changes etc.

I think there are unlocked phones out there that take prepaid cards but I don't know where to go to get what I am looking for.
