Hey Rich

Just signed on with my more coffee and there you are. Sun is shining and now a smile on my face. Tiene un beuna dia mi amigo.

Et une bonne journée à vous.

There's some that would suggest it's a little too late for that! :D

Seriously though, that was wild! Is it the norm that you guys get our networks combined on a single channel, or was that just a different type of feed that you can subscribe to?

In Canada we get American channels just like you do with a whole bunch of extra Canadian ones.

The US networks come in with Canadian ads if a Canadian channel is broadcasting the same program at the same time.

We often get Canadian versions of specialty channels like The Food Network or MTV.

At 10 PM we must watch the Canadian Socialist News.:D

BTW in Stowe and many other border areas the local cable providers will have several Canadian channels including ones in French. Horrors!

Just read in another thread about the workers on the ship speaking ENGLISH. I agree they must speak english being they are serving mainly Americans leaving from a USA port. Even the Captain has to learn english. So according to some of you, should the crew be speaking spanish if the ship is going to Mexico? Don't think so. This is just another one of those issues that some of you can't seem to agree on.

Come on people think.

Its not about a language,

its about the cheapest price for television.

Then when you cannot find something to watch on the tube, you get up and go out on deck and buy a few cocktails.

With carnival the only thing is squeezing out a few more pennies.

What does this have to do with anything at all? People are discussing the tv channels available shipboard, and the spanish language commercials were mentioned. Seems like you are going pretty far out of your way to hijack a thread and turn it into a biased rant against spanish speakers. Let it go.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :o

I just experienced the new channel lineup on the Dream last week. Until I found this thread, it didn't even occur to me that it would be such an issue for some.

In fact, when I saw the different feeds, I was very pleased. The first thing that crossed my mind was that it was about time that Carnival globalized itself and realized that their passengers come from different countries, not just the USA.

Whether it's for budget reasons or not, it's nice to experience something different than what we normally get at home. Call me crazy, but I don't go on vacation to watch CBS, NBC or ABC, or to eat and drink at McDonald's, Starbucks or Fat Tuesday's. But apparently there are plenty of fellow cruisers that can't go a week without these staples of the American culture...

While I agree with you, I'm not sure why you picked this post as an example of "a biased rant against spanish speakers".

Half of the posts have been along those lines. Also there are a bunch of posts I don't get.

Since mine on the peso may be one of them- let me explain. How many here go to ports in Mexico with a pocketful of pesos? Very few. Instead we march into a foreign country and expect to use American dollars. And yes, they are accepted. I once saw a man get terribly upset and shout that someone in a bazaar wouldn't take his American money. And this was in Turkey- not just south of the border. And here we have complaints about a foreign ship in international waters with some foreign language shows. Rather selective indignation I felt.

Yeah, there are a bunch of posts like this, kind of odd. This was the most recent, after people were kind of back on track with the original subject.

I get a kick out of the different tv stations and programming where we travel. I would prefer not to watch tv on a cruise or any other kind of travel, but since my husband uses it as a night light I have to deal with it. I get a kick out of hearing tv in a different language. We had a good time watching Terminator 2, with english subtitles. The subtitle for "hasta la vista baby" was "sayanora baby".

We got a chuckle out of that one.

It's amazing that someone agrees with this statement and didn't even see this was directed at them.

If you do not like Spanish commercials, change the tv. I do not cruise to watch tv.

Americans speak English, French, Spanish, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, etc. It has nothing to do with being lazy. English is one of the hardest languages to learn.

Do you learn EVERY language of the countries you travel to? For business reasons companies cater to those who speak another language. Whether in the US or other countries.

I agree with you 100%:)

Hurray! I am a typical cruise critic member!!!!

Now when I feel like Carnival has gone too far with spanish, I will start cruising with another cruiseline. If they all go down that road, I will find another vacation to start doing.

Maybe you should go on an All Inclusive to Mexico or Central America.:D

Now to answer about spanish being crammed down our throats.....

Right here, this thread is a good example. Call your local bank, cable provider, electric company.... you get the picture. You hear spanish before talking to a real person. Go buy something and the package has one side in spanish. It's over and over, everywhere we turn. It wasn't this way in our part of the country until a few years ago. We are going to be the minority here before too long.

I do not expect to be catered to in other countries by having everything presented to me in english. I am happy they do it but I don't expect it. Why do they do it? They do it because they think it's expected and to make a sell. If the foreigners can speak our language when we visit their country, why can't we expect english on our own turf?

Now when I feel like Carnival has gone too far with spanish, I will start cruising with another cruiseline. If they all go down that road, I will find another vacation to start doing.

You just answered your own question.

Have fun in Ensenada!

What was really cool on our last cruise (Bermuda) was the Canadian feed that we got. It was a combo of shows from CBS, ABC, Fox, and NBC. You never knew what your were going to get. :)

While Canadian cable companies distribute US networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc.), the Canadian national networks such as "Global" also pick up individual programs from US distributors. So, if you're watching Global, you might get a CBS show at 8:00, an NBC show at 9:00 and then a Canadian show at 10:00. Canadians watching cable can usually choose to tune to either the Canadian or US Channel, but the actual feed for both will be the Canadian feed with the Canadian commercials. This is rarely an issue, except during Super Bowl, where Canadians read the next day about commercials they didn't see. But now that there is YouTube ...

Talking about Spanish-------

Have you noticed that when you go to Mexico that all the merchants and everyone you run into speak English but here in the good old U.S. of A. you have to press 1 for English

I don't know what my great grandparents would have done if they didn't learn English.

I was on a cruise last May on the Carnival Glory during the NBA Conference Finals (Miami/Chicago). The game was on TNT, but TNTLA did not have the game. A lot of people were wondering about the game. Game 1 was not shown. For game 2, the ship happened to get a signal from an Argentine station that had the TNT feed of the game in English, the only thing not in English was the halftime show. They put the game on in the sports bar and on the big screen in the Lido deck. Most of the people were watching the game outside.
