Lima to Rio de Janerio

1) Lima is a very underrated city--try to get there a few days early to

have time to explore

2) The big jewelry companies in Rio do hospitality like nowhere else--they will offer you free transfers and sightseeing (Take them up on it --there is no hidden effort to sell you anything!--its not like timeshares:D) They should have couriers on the ship.

3) If you are doing your own air, Rio- Lima is cheap (relatively)--check out

a round trip ticket from home to Lima and a separate ticket from Rio back

to Lima (especially if you have frequent flier miles--on some airlines

(eg Continental) Lima requires many less miles than Rio--I flew to Lima

on miles and paid in money between Rio and Lima)

We will be in Lima for two full days. Is there a must see in Lima or should we try for Machu Picchu?

You should definitely see Mach Picchu but you need more than 2 days.

The trip to Machu Picchu is a full day alone, then there is Cuzco itself and some beautifull countryside and villages/markets + the RT flight to Cuzco.

Don't forget that you would need at least a day to acclimate to the altitude. If you want to see Machu Picchu (and you should) you need more than 2 days, IMO.

It is (just barely) possible to do Machu Picchu in 2 days, but like Paulchili says, you need more time to do it properly. My vote would be to enjoy Lima for the two days and go back to Peru for a separate vacation for 3 weeks (Cuzco/Machu Picchu, Arequipa/Canon de Colca, Ayacucho, Trujillo/Chiclayo/Sipan, Iquitos...)

My hit parade--

1)colonial architecture downtown, starting from Plaza de Armas (include Cathedral, old post office, Santo Domingo Church--Casa de Riva Aguero has nice folklore exhibits and the old mansion itself is interesting). Nice outdoor cafes.

2)Barranco--nice old neighborhood with wonderful Pedro de Osma Museum, art galleries and restaurants(Las Mesitas famous for great pastries and desserts)

3) Major Museums: Start at the National Museum (Museo de la Nacion) for best overview of Peruvian cultures .(Forget gold museum (tacky and many forgeries))

4)Pueblo Libre Museums(within walking distance of each other--follow blue stripe on sidewalk.) National Museum of Arqueology and Anthropology (run down, but beautiful ancient tapestries). Museo Rafael Larco Herrera fantastic ceramics from the north)

5)Pedro de Osma Museum as above

6)Eat lots of seafood!:)

Tourism is pretty well organized if you don't want to do things on your own. Biggest tour operator is Lima Tours.

Taxis have no meters--you'll pay more than locals, but the rates aren't too extreme (use common sense, and agree on a price before you set out.)

Tourist office at airport usually has better supply of brochures than one downtown. Bookstore next to the downtown tourist office has nice selection on Peruvian culture and artistic traditions (But buy a guidebook from your favorite series before you go)

Forgot--Art Museum was closed for renovations but should be open by the time you are there (Colonial/PreColombian/Modern some of everything)

Symphony is nothing special but ballet is surprisingly good (full length story ballets in the Bolshoi tradition--different from what one is used to in New York or Miami) should that be of interest. www.balletmunicipal.com
