jp2001 Posted April 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I ended up not usingo nly half of the million of lotions/shampoo/etc bottles I brought (True, I didn't bring a million but at least 10-15 small bottles of everything and it wasn't worth it). zimmerjulie Posted April 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 16, 2004 The travel size Pepto Bismol and the dramamine (just in case!). I have bought these two items prior to approximately 8 cruises with the thought that I'll save money over having to buy them at the ship's store if I need them. I have never used them. Boy, the money we spend to try to save a few bucks. No more for me! (Then again, if I stop now, will I jinx my lucky streak? )
Kuppykat Posted April 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I know next time I will be traveling a lot lighter...beside my 200lb spouse..lol, I'll be leaving home half the clothes I packed. I took an outfit for everyday and one for everynight and of course the "What if's". I didn't use half of what i brought. Of course I was told this by many but I refused to believe them.... jmcdon7230 Posted April 16, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Kuppykat is right on with this one. I'll leave a lot more of the clothes I packed at home. I'm starting to believe that with Freestyle, you just don't need as many clothes. With traditional cruising you see the same waiter and tablemates every evening...with Freestyle no one knows (or cares) about what you wore the night before. YacFamily Posted April 17, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2004 What to leave at home ? Half your clothes simply ! Start packing, lay it all out, then divide in half. Do not forget there is laundry areas on all ships that is complimentary for personal skivies etc. A small sample size detergent, etc takes little packing space. C'mon, EVERYONE buys stuff on vacation and we HAVE to wear it, n'est pas ! For the menfolk, get some cruise wear shirts A la Kramer or George's dad on Seinfeld, kick back and relax. The wilder the better One idea of what NOT to forget : a dollar store hanging shoe rack to put on the bathroom door, and a dozen plastic clothes pins to hang your bathing suits etc. to dry. At debarkation, let the maids know it's theirs to keep ... you won't believe the smiles and thank you's you will get. If you cruise again and happen to have the same maids, WOW they will treat you even better than they usually do !! Hint, bring extras to begin with and give them early " oops brought an extra by mistake, would you use it ? " Amazing what a little kindness will do ! We are going on the Dawn June 27th and cannot wait ! Scuba, snorkelling, room servicing at midnight, shows, casino, standing early morning coffee order, YEAH BABY !!! Breakfast EVERYDAY in the Venetian, what a way to start each day !!
The Moyers Posted April 17, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2004 The formal clothes for one thing. Although I liked formal nights on other cruises I have taken I found that not having a formal night made us not really have the desire to dress up. Hubby took his tux and I took my dresses and I didn't wear them. Since we did Hawaii we found the casual clothes we took and the clothes we bought in Honolulu before the cruise to be "just right". gardencat Posted April 17, 2004 #13 Share Posted April 17, 2004 Ah yes but which half, that is the question. Yac Family, Is there a laundry on every ship? On Norwegian Dawn there was one, and I made use of it but, I thought I heard that on Star there was a pay for laundry service and it sounded to me like it wasn't too fast a turn around. Anyone got more info on what is usually available on different ships?

deb1835 Posted April 18, 2004 #15 Share Posted April 18, 2004 We're leaving the formal wear at home this time too. Would rather just wear the dressy casual evry night for dinner (I'm taking a few pairs of elastic waist pants!). BBT Posted April 18, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 18, 2004 I agree with leaving the tux behind. NCL is nice and casual and so can do without it. Rent one from the ship if you really want to go the formal route. That way you don't have to run through an airport dragging it with you. General rule of thumb (as noted by many previously), lay out all the clothes you think you will need, and all the money you think you will need. Then pack just half the clothes, and double the money. I guarantee a good time that way! Another thing to leave behind? Any bad attitude you may have. Ruins more vacations than anything. Just decide that you are going to have the best time of your life! And you will! Have great cruises all!
