legalcruiser Posted April 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Just wondering for those who frequented the casino was it more of a AC atmosphere or Vegas? Anyone who has been to both places will know the difference. You know AC - very uptight, afraid to play (get dirty looks and nasty comments if you hit on a 12 when the dealer is showing ten), etc. or Vegas - lots of fun, laid-back, jovial dealers. I am just afraid that since it is sailing out of NY it will have a much more serious atmosphere. Although I didn't love Carnival last summer, the casino was great and lots of fun. Hoping it is the same this time. Thanks Dawn 5/23/04 RCCL Enchantment 7/02 Carnival Glory 8/
Rik2084 Posted April 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 16, 2004 More like Vegas. I only played craps and the dealers would joke around. After a while they would know what you liked to bet and would ask if you wanted a spcific bet. Just one warning- When we were disembarking, a lady who was at the craps table a lot told me she saw the pit boss switch the dice one time with one he had up his sleeve. This happened after a long run and right after the shooter sevened out. I never saw this but did notice that the pit boss did handle the dice more than normal. ZoneHPH Posted April 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2004 dunno what to say about the Dawn, my friend. but having been on the Sun, Sea, and Wind...and gambling in Vegas (mainly Caesars, Excalibur, and Rio)...or in Atlantic City (only Showboat)...or at Mohegan Sun...i can tell you that it's really "just for fun" on the cruise ships. i would say that i'm one of the few that actually plays to win. as you know the ship "table maximums" are almost like "table minimums" when compared to Vegas. (e.g. 3/27 Wind - 35:1 bet in roulette...max bet = $25) but you know what? people were having fun. the craps table will always have the cheering bunch...let it ride seems to have some good excitment. black jack...these players seem to be the serious ones (besides poker players). just don't split your face cards, don't hit when the dealer shows 16, and i would say you'll be fine. FOR NOVICE GAMBLERS: now is the time to really get your feet wet in gambling. no better place to "practice" than on a cruise. WE ARE...PENN STATE! Kuppykat Posted April 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I frequent AC very often and have been to Vegas 2xs. I really have never noticed much difference once in the casinos. What annoys me in any casino are those that stand behind your back and play your money and I found a lot of this on the ship. All in all I still enjoyed the casino very much. legalcruiser Posted April 16, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Thanks all. We do go to AC since it is so close but I always feel uncomfortable. I remember one time I saw a man sit down mid-hand and the dealer wasn't paying attention and dealt him a card. Everyone including the inept dealer yelled and berated the man. I felt horrible. To me, AC is much more of a place where people go to play not go on vacation or to have fun. Zone - I also play to win but don't enjoy the cutthroat atmosphere. I actually love Harrah's in New Orleans - the pitboss is usually singing something on the mic and handing out beads to players. It makes it much easier to stomach your losses. I usually stick to the BJ rules but sometimes you just get that feeling in your stomach to buck them. Now of course I wouldn't do that at a high limit table. I stick to $5 or $10 tables. Rare uneamie Posted April 16, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I have a question? Do they have "poker tables" on Dawn? I play slots and my hubby plays poker in Atlantic City and he would love it if the Dawn had poker tables. If not then he settles for "black jack". Any body know? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <applet code="countdown.class" CODEBASE="http://*************/java-sys" width="203" height="25"> <param name="font" value="lcdb0"> <param name="year" value=2005> <param name="month" value=1> <param name="day" value=30> <param name="hour" value=16> </applet> Countdown till NCL Dawn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Home Lines - 5/1988 Disney Wonder - 10/1998 Carnival Triumph - 7/2002 Carnival Legend - 10/2003 NCL - Dawn - 1/2005
Kuppykat Posted April 16, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I don't recall seeing poker tables in the casino. If you are able to get a few people together you can always get a game together in the game room on deck 12. "Happiness is a choice"

jenn_m Posted April 17, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2004 I loved the casino on the Dawn!! Definitely laid back...some of the nicest pit bosses I've ever met. I agree, though, Kuppykat, lurkers irritate me and there usually is a lot of that on a cruise. No poker tables, unfortunately, but you can get a pretty good fix from 3 card and Caribbean stud. gardencat Posted April 17, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2004 oops, think I'm guilty. I did spend some time on the Dawn watching people in the casino. I've never gambled in that way before (just lottery tickets occasionally)lol and thought it was a good way to try to fiqure out how to do it. Also must admit I found it interesting to see the different styles of playing different people seemed to have. Is watching like that a big no no? jenn_m Posted April 17, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 17, 2004 gardencat - It's totally fine on a cruise! That's why so many beginners go to a cruise casino because the atmosphere is so laid back. And it's actually fine to watch the tables. What I hate is when people (and it's usually a group) stand behind you watching the slots. It makes me nervous when people watch me blow all of my money, LOL.
