mi3stooges Posted November 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted November 10, 2011 I have a whole new sympathy for those who suffer vertigo or motion sickness. I walked off my cruise Sat Nov 5th…and only this morning did I start to feel better. It was a 7 night cruise and I have sailed 9 cruises altogether. This one was the worst sea conditions by far (my FAVORITE). It rocked and rolled…no pun intended the entire cruise. I was in my glory …so I thought. I’m not sure if it had to do with the alcohol I had the night before coupled with my “age” but I don’t think my body liked it and told me so. WOW… anyone else suffer from vertigo or motion sickness???
valleyvillage Posted November 10, 2011 #2 Share Posted November 10, 2011 YIKES! My very first cruise I was so sick the first day I thought I would just disembark and join my group back in Vancouver. But this veteran cruiser spotted my green pallor and insisted I eat a sandwich and take Bonine and stay hydrated and full. She said empty stomachs make it worse. I have followed her advice ever since and the only time I got a little woozy was when I forgot to take a Bonine one night. I hope this was just a passing thing and you'll be back on the high seas before long. Take care!

I also stumble around at times after a cruise, and don't usually drink after I get home !!!:D
bakerintn Posted November 10, 2011 #4 Share Posted November 10, 2011 post cruise vertigo is common...especially bad for that first shore-side shower,in my experience!! I used to do multi-day sailboat races and i remember walking down the pier when we got back to port, in a zig-zag pattern. It usually cleared up by the next day for me. HMK8273 Posted November 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted November 10, 2011 Been there done that - even on calm cruises. Very first cruise - 12 days of out of NYC to Quebec and back on the Jewel. Things were great - very calm the entire way up and back. Got off the ship, picked up my luggage, got in the car and drove all the way to DC nonstop. Once I got out of the car at home, I thought the world wouldn't stop moving. My inner ears got me so adjusted to being on a boat, that walking on dry land felt like a whole new experience. I don't get motion sickness on cruises (thankfully) so it was just a matter of getting my land legs back but if that is what vertigo feels like, put a fork in me - I would be done. I had to keep myself occupied and on the move for at least 3 days to get over it. Eventually it will pass - but ugh.
VideoTech Posted November 10, 2011 #6 Share Posted November 10, 2011 Although I've never gotten seasick on any of our cruises (knock on wood!), I've almost always had a mild case of post-cruise vertigo when I returned. It's odd that sometimes it even takes a day to develop. It usually goes away pretty quickly, but it's a sad reminder that I'm not out on the ocean anymore! Pokeraddict Posted November 10, 2011 #7 Share Posted November 10, 2011 I have had it off and on for years sometimes it would last for 3/4 days to the point that I would have to lay still or sleep. But have never had an outbreak on any off our cruises. Now I get it 5/6 days a week since March but it has been mild but still annoying and sometime scary when I see bicycles coming at me on the side walk. I have forced my doctor to send to a specialist which I'm going to next month but I'm not expecting any cure as they don't seem to know what brings it on. I am concerned about our upcoming cruise, luckily it's rare that the waters around Hawaii Islands get rough. I'm also going to take ginger tabs with me as I don't like the other stuff

Dayenu Posted November 10, 2011 #9 Share Posted November 10, 2011 Motion sickness, yes, I take ginger and don't stop for a few days after the cruise. Also Bonine (meclizine) for rough seas.

Here is an interesting read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mal_de_debarquement Thank you sooo much for helping me understand what it was. Thanks everyone for your thoughts (and unfortunate experiences). I have never gotten car sickness or motion sickness or anything like this before. Like I said...I love the rough seas..but we had it for the entire cruise. Plus, the night before disembarkation..well..I think I had almost a bottle of wine  which i'm sure contributed to the way I felt. lol. I will take something post cruise next time for sure...cause I will not stop cruising!!

But like you did not keep me off the seas (and I love the rocking and rolling too!). I do take the bonine for at least a week post cruise now and not had this re-occur. Good Luck and Happy Cruising! mommyto2girls Posted November 11, 2011 #14 Share Posted November 11, 2011 I suffer from severe Menieres Disease which is a complete imbalance of the inner ear..a very severe vertigo condition. I cruise all the time and I take Bonine (thanks to my doctors advice) I don't know why Dramamine does not work for me. Those chewable Bonines are a miracle drug. searoses Posted November 11, 2011 #15 Share Posted November 11, 2011 took about 10 days my first cruise. the first 3 or 4 were awful. my woodstove was undulating and my kitchen counters kept"dropping" out of reach. swimming in a pool was actually dangerous as i couldn't decide which way was up! 7 cruises later it's only a couple of days and no more moving woodstoves! LOL........i think it is very interesting that the brain seems to somehow remember as it is sometimes years between cruises.i have even felt it mildly after a land vacation when i have been in the ocean for hours each day. Medtech2 Posted November 11, 2011 #16 Share Posted November 11, 2011 I have also gotten vertigo driving in the mountains, at times so severe I could only lie on the ground with my eyes closed... I don't wish that feeling on anybody!
cabincop Posted November 11, 2011 #17 Share Posted November 11, 2011 I cruise alot and for me I know when the seas are rocky then I get that wobbly feelin after I get home. But I love ships that rock and roll I know I am lucky that way I fel bad for people who get sick but I lived on a boat for years when I was a kid and used to ask my dad to go into wakes so I could feel the motion. I alos drink alot of water on cruises so I think that might help.

I'm also going to take ginger tabs with me as I don't like the other stuff I got vertigo so bad that I was actually hospitalized for a week. The vertigo lasted about 2 months but most of the time I could cope with it. I was told by a specialist that there are small crystals on the tips of hairs right behind your eardrums. If these crystals get out of place that is what causes certains types of vertigo. The only treatment is being put in certain postitions on a rotating table for certain amounts of time. Eventually the crystals go back to where they are supposed to be. They biggest drawback is each treatment session really triggers a bad case of vertigo that can last different amounts of time.:( Hopefully if you have to do this you will have good luck with them and they will help get rid of the vertigo for you. It's really a bummer to have this happen and you don't even get the benefits of cruising to blame it on.
Rare nbsjcruiser Posted November 11, 2011 #19 Share Posted November 11, 2011 post cruise vertigo is common...especially bad for that first shore-side shower,in my experience!! I used to do multi-day sailboat races and i remember walking down the pier when we got back to port, in a zig-zag pattern. It usually cleared up by the next day for me. After a cruise, yes the shower is one of those things that bother me. You swear the shower is rocking back and forth. Also, walking up stairs is another one. On the ship you're used to the stairs not quite being where you think they should be at first. Then you get used to it and your body compensates for the movement. Back on land, I find my body still tries to compensate for the movement that is no longer there.
mi3stooges Posted November 11, 2011 Author #20 Share Posted November 11, 2011 Props to all who deal with this.. I too have sea legs when I get back, but his time it was in my head!! Next time I will drink a lot of water and use Bonine for the few days following my cruise. Thanks for all the suggestions!!
