Balcony's on Mariner. Whats best, Hump or Aft

Aft balconys have ash problems from the smoke stacks. That's a fact. There are A LOT of documented cases on the boards about people's balconys being completey useless from ash. Go with hump.

While yes there are alot of documented cases of ash, including us having a tiny, little bit on NOS on 9390, it all depends on the location of the balcony and the floor. Our relatives were in 9392 and they had absolutely NO ash.

We've got 7388 booked this coming summer. I've never read where that corner cabin has had ash.

Like so many things, you can't make a sweeping conclusion about all aft balconies based on a few.

Actually if youve actually searched the boards and read the soot threads you will see it has absolutely zero to do about location. It has everything to do with wind direction. You could have zero soot one day and be covered the rest of the trip. That's been noted plenty of times by people who have had the same room and one trip was covered and the next nothing. Or half a trip with none and the other half covered. It's all blind luck.

Hey!

You are right.

We have been lucky I guess!!!

Just about everything is blind luck when cruising anyway!

Mother Nature, strikes, waiters, table mates, room steward, travel delays,

customs, immigration, lost baggage, transfers, health matters, food quality, entertaiment, soot and etc.

If people cruise, we will all have our stories!

Some bad some great!

Out tablemate won 1000+ in the casino!

My wife won 30 bucks at Atlantis! Paid for lunch under the bridge - conch, fried plantains and cervezas.

If you enjoy cruising, take the chances

go and enjoy!

A good attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure!

Being happy does not mean that everything is perfect.

It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections

of your expectaions.

I just want

to live

happily

ever after,

every

now

and

then,

on

a

cruise

ship!

We got very spoiled by the aft balconies on Rhapsody, especially the corner ones that wrap completely around. When I had a chance to check out the aft balconies on Mariner, it seemed there was a lot of the ship structure in the way.

We've had the center hump and just left of center hump on Mariner and totally LOVED both of them. I know its all perception, but its kind of cool to look back and forward with no obstructions.

We now have an aft balcony planned for Serenade. It's our first time in this class of ship, so I'm hoping its more like Rhapsody.

Hi Guys,

1st of all - I'am no native speaker, sorry for bad spelling or wrong words ...

Just wanted to add something about the balconies on the Mariner otS, we attended to the TA from ROME to Galveston as well and lived in stateroom 6214, the first starboard balcony stateroom in the front. Was lovely to have the extra space on the left side, there is a bow in the glass which gives you approx 6 sq ft more than on a regular balcony.

Beeing on the atlantic ocean my wife thougt a bit different about our cabins choice - if see is rough you'll stay on one of the most shaky places on board, attended with terrible noise when water bangs into the bay where the anchor is located. This cabin might be cool on the mediterean seas, but wasnt the right choice for this tour.

Might be useful for someone, we'll stick with cabins in the aft in the future.

We just got off the Mariner with hump cabin 6212. It was on the side of the hump rather than in the center. There is a "wedge" of extra space in the cabin which was on the side of the bed that would be closest to the balcony doors. I really liked that extra space when getting in and out of the bed. No bumping the wall/door.

The balcony was the same size as other balconies. Two chairs, small table. To me, being closer to the elevators was more important than a larger balcony since we really didn't need that extra balcony space.

By the way, our cabin stewardess, Irinia, was one of the best we had ever had.

Glad to hear your cabin stewardess was great--we have 6620 on our up coming b2b. Will she still be on board?

Love the afts & love the hump. If you are traveling with a group, go for an aft cabin--lots of room for parties. Have had 1390 & 7388--7388 is huge, no soot, no vibration & measures approx. 14 x 20--holds lots of people. If it is just the 2 of us, we prefer the hump--just a very convenient location.

We were in 6612 rather than what I had in the first post. If your cabin is in her "block," then she will be there if they don't shift her around. I asked when her contract was up because we have the cabin 6614 booked for the TA next year and hoped to see her again then.

Every day I left a dollar and a piece of snack candy for her along with a note thanking her for something. She was most appreciative and thanked me graciously for it. She left bathroom amenities for us several times. She kept my six-pack cooler of ice full and ignored what was in the bottom of it. Her English was excellent.

What would you like to hear about?

We just returned on Mariner from Rome in one!

They 7388 and 7688 are a regular room, two seater couch, with a large corner balcony!

Some other corner balconies are much larger rooms!

We love them 7388 and 7688!!!

You walk everywhere on the ship anyway,

even the stairs if you need the exercise.

We needed the exercise so don't mind walking to the back of ship.

We love aft and have been in 7388 or 7688

3 times at least on TA's! Maybe 4 cruises total? A senior moment?

We have one again booked next year on BTB!

We have with no complaints, and have had no soot at all,

and loved our space for cocktail parties with friends on balcony,

and loved the views of leaving the ports on sailaways.

Some aft corners are open to sky with no cover and some full cover

depending on floors! The photo above is from 6th floor with full cover!

It's all relative to personal priorities and preferences on the ship!

Sorry for the delay getting back to you.

If we cant get an aft cabin, we will go for the hump. Is port or starboard better for the sun. We plan to book the TA from Rome to Galveston for 2013. Doing 1st Ta next year, was in an inside in October and an inside for next year. Going to New York for a few days on the way home. (I couldn't open the photo link)

The hump cabins are actually aft of midship. And while midships is more stable than the stern, whether it's "better" depends on what you're looking for in a cabin. On Voyager and Freedom class, we prefer the center hump because they are more convenient and the views forward and aft are terrific. On Vision or Radiance class, we prefer the stern of the ship - there's nothing interfering with the view on those classes. And the walk is shorter.:p

I should think that portside will give you more sun, being on the south side as you head west.

You are correct. We had port hump on the crossing last month. There were times the sun was so hot on the balcony it was not comfortable sitting out there so i have almost decided to go with starboard balcony next fall.

I booked the port hump for the November 2012 TA as soon as the itinerary came out. Then while on the spring 2011 TA, I booked a starboard non-hump. It was $50 more pp but I got $200 OBC for a net gain of $100. I still have the hump, port booked though while I decide what to do.

Our hump was on the side which I liked because we had extra space in the cabin next to the bed making it easier to get in and out.

Decisions, decisions to make.
