Fort Amsterdam –

Is it easy to get to Fort Amsterdam from Philipsburg? Can you walk from town? Taxi?

It would take over 30 minutes from town and it would be uphill and just too hot to me. You could take a taxi to Little Bay and spend some time there and also visit the fort or take a taxi to Marigot and climb up to Fort St. Louis if you want to see the best fort on the island.

There's not much remaining of Fort Amsterdam. The Divi Little Bay Hotel & Timeshare is built on the same stretch of land. Make sure you have good walking shoes as the terrain is very rocky and uneven. Depending on the heat/humidity, it may take more than 30 minutes to walk from the midpoint of Front Street to Divi. You will get a nice view of Great Bay and the cruise ship port in the distance.

Fort Saint Louis in Marigot is slighly better preserved in that it at least has walls and a few cannons. There is significantly more walking over stone steps and rocky terrain to get to the top.

These forts are nowhere near the condition of San Juan's El Morro or San Cristobal nor St Kitt's Brimstone Hill. They are free for a reason.

The view from Fort St Louis is spectacular. You see so much of the island from up there.

If you park or get dropped off at the lot closest to the last set of stairs to the fort the climb is not too bad and you will be up to the top within 5 minutes.
