tarheel423 Posted November 22, 2011 #1 Share Posted November 22, 2011 Can anyone who's been to Lamanai recently tell me whether closed-toe, Keen-type sandals would be appropriate for the tour, or would sneakers be a better choice? Thanks for any suggestions you can give.
Will in sunny FL Posted November 23, 2011 #2 Share Posted November 23, 2011 We went to Lamani this past April with Island Marketing & we both wore sneakers as you will be walking in & out of a boat, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing up dirt hills, climbing on ruins going up to the top etc. And you might even get some rain ? The boat ride there is as much fun & as interesting as the ruins were, to us. Enjoy Belize. Bill in FL
vermonter16 Posted November 23, 2011 #3 Share Posted November 23, 2011 Keen closed toe sandals would be great! I think sneakers would be fine too! DH wore hiking boots because he has weak ankles, I wore hiking shoes. But, I would say that Keens would be more than fine. Just make sure they are closed toe. Roswell_IcePrincess Posted November 25, 2011 #4 Share Posted November 25, 2011 I agree closed toed sandals or sneakers. You will be getting in and out of a boat and climbing ruins. I loved that excursion. Saw lots of wildlife. When I went I wore Teva hiking sandals. They were open toed but worked fine.
Sunnyshine64 Posted November 28, 2011 #5 Share Posted November 28, 2011 Took the tour on Tuesday of this past week, and my hubby/I both wore closed-toe Keen shoes. Very comfortable and durable for this excursion. Have fun! PS Wear a heavy duty poncho!!
tarheel423 Posted January 17, 2012 Author #6 Share Posted January 17, 2012 I thought perhaps since I started this thread, I would answer my own question. Thanks to all who offered suggestions. We did, indeed, go on a ship's tour to the Lamanai ruins in Dec. We both wore sneakers but there were lots of other people in Keen-type shoes, also. As others have said, either would be appropriate, it just depends on which you feel would be the most comfortable and which would give the most stability. I would definitely vote for closed-toe shoes (lots of exposed tree roots and rocks on the trails) but one gal in our group had on flip-flops (she didn't climb the ruins). We thoroughly enjoyed our day. Ponchos came in handy on the boat ride back as we ran into heavy rain. There was a roof on the boat but open sides and high speeds made some kind of rain gear a necessity. For what it's worth, our guide wore sneakers.
