Top-Cat Posted April 8, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 8, 2005 Now this is Bazar! I have an aunt who lives on Lake Okechobee, FL. She called my mom today because she heard on the news (local) that a woman was taken from a returning cruise ship an had to be treated for "bed bug " bites! She did not say which cruise line, but that the lady was first treated in a port after several days of reporting to the ship that something was 'biting" her in her cabin. The ship returned to the Miami port. The alegation was finally checked on and the woman received treatment. Did anybody else here this?
JrMafia90 Posted April 8, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 8, 2005 No, I didn't hear this. But we were on the Glory in August and we had bed bugs. Their not that uncommon. My mother-in-law got bit by them too!

jckvpa0 Posted April 8, 2005 #9 Share Posted April 8, 2005 Now this just makes me feel warm & fuzzy about my upcomming cruise. I was already having the comforter taken off & have the blanket covered by sheets. What do I ask for 2 fitted sheets? Actually I am asking for a roll top put on our bed so we don't feel the crack of the two beds being put together. But how clean is that!
corina27 Posted April 8, 2005 #10 Share Posted April 8, 2005 Maybe she carried the bugs in from when she went to one of the ports..Lets hope anyway.:(
Are we there yet? Posted April 8, 2005 #11 Share Posted April 8, 2005 The first thing I do when I check into a hotel is pull down the sheets to make sure they are clean. It has never occured to me to check for little critters........until now.
stlrboo Posted April 8, 2005 #12 Share Posted April 8, 2005 Maybe she carried the bugs in from when she went to one of the ports..Lets hope anyway.:(I would guess that this is the case. They really do keep the cabins clean and well disinfected.. Most likely were carried back from a port-of-call.. JMHO! ;)
corina27 Posted April 8, 2005 #13 Share Posted April 8, 2005 The good news is you really wont be sleeping that much on a cruise.Thers is plenty of activities to keep you busy.:)
hstrybuf Posted April 8, 2005 #14 Share Posted April 8, 2005 This is being discussed on the Royal Caribbean forum. Seems it was the Jewel of the Seas and the bedbugs were in the headboard. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=161449
SuzieQK Posted April 8, 2005 #15 Share Posted April 8, 2005 They had a bit on 20/20 or primetime about a month ago on bedbugs in hotels. The way you can tell if a bed has them is pull back the sheets and look in the crevise of the matress(you know the one that the cording goes around on the edge of the mattress. Look really close and if you see what looks like little coffee grounds guess what!?! YOU HAVE BED BUGS!! We look at the mattresses now everytime we stay somewhere. Good Luck and dont let the little critters bite a leg near you!! __________________
HeidiHo Posted April 8, 2005 #16 Share Posted April 8, 2005 I got some weird bites last fall after a hotel stay. They didn't bother me or itch but tooked a couple of weeks to completely disappear. I figured they might be bed bugs.

MamaParrotHead Posted April 8, 2005 #19 Share Posted April 8, 2005 I'm standing here itching. thanks for the "heads up" and thanks, Suzie, for the tip on checking in the crevice. ICK. if we do find them, do we just say to the steward, "excuse me, can you disinfect my mattress of the critters infesting it right now?" or what? *gag* LOL
gtalum Posted April 8, 2005 #20 Share Posted April 8, 2005 This is not strictly a cruise thing. Hotels have "bed bugs" too.
Top-Cat Posted April 12, 2005 Author #21 Share Posted April 12, 2005 Just in case anyone is intrested, here is the link to the video for this story. The passengers were reimbursed for their cruise, but not medical expenses. They looked awful.... http://www.local6.com/travelgetaways/4365719/detail.html

gtalum Posted April 12, 2005 #24 Share Posted April 12, 2005 From the story: The Wasserstorms say this is the last cruise they will ever take. If it's solely because of the bedbugs, they had better never stay in a hotel again either.
