Snorkeling: Roatan or Cozumel?

This is a tough question to answer, because both locations are world-renowned diving/snorkeling locations! I've done both, but if I had to pick, I'd say Roatan simply because of the uniqueness of the location. However, both are unbelievable places to snorkel, so feel comfortable choosing either.

As a previous poster mentioned, you cannot go wrong with either location. However, I've been diving and snorkeling all over the world and I think the snorkeling off of Tabayana Beach in Roatan is one of the best sites I've ever experienced. You can walk in off the beach and swim for hours and not see the same things twice. There is also a wide variety of coral and fish to view. It was simply spectacular.

In addition, there are not alot of other things to do in Roatan and there are plenty of other fun activities in Cozumel.

Either way, have a great time.

I just saw the sand flea question. We have not noticed sand fleas at Tabyana Beach. That is on the west side. They are bad on the east side. I'm not sure if that holds true all the time. Might be the wind or something else making the difference. It's just been that way for us.

Roatan: Tabyana Beach. No sand fleas. I have heard this rumor, but never experienced it. We, however, were there in November - December. Perhaps it depends on the season.

To be fair: I haven't been to Chankanaab (sp)in Cozumel, but will go there in September on the Sea. I understand it was great as well. Went to Dzul Ha in Cozumel last trip and it wasn't great.

Before we went on our cruise, I had also read about sand fleas in Roatan. I didn't want to take any chances, so I brought sunscreen with Off bug repellent in it. I'm not sure if there were sand fleas or if the sunscreen worked, but they didn't bother us.

Have fun.

We were at Tabyana in late May, and we didn't have a problem with sand fleas. I did pack some bug repellent, but never had to use it.
