Hal's site states Callao (Lima) I was confused.

Bill

that's because most North Americans have never heard of Callao, which has morphed into one major population center with Lima...which they have probably heard of. Callao can be a bit dangerous so if you go out of the port by yourself, watch yourself. Some ROTTERDAM pax in 2010 were mugged near the gate to the port.

The port area sucks. We noticed it when we had booked an excursion in Lima. We were bussed to the entrance of the port from the ship and our driver was there. Lima is another story- great food, sites and beautiful center.

Yeah, Callao isn't fantastic (although the San Felipe fort is quite cool) but even if you don't have long, then the centre of Lima is only about 20 minutes in a taxi and has some fabulous architecture. The best areas for eating out, like Miraflores and San Isidro are a little further away - say around 40 minutes by cab.
