How old is too old for a backpacker or yha?

Recommended Posts

I my youth I have stayed in youth hostels, but we are both in our 40's.

The prices for these types of accommodations are much closer to what we are used to paying for an economy hotel at home, though I am pretty sure the accommodations are more like college dorms, even with a private room. For I few days I can rough it before my cruise, but are we just way to old to even think about this type of accommodation in AU?

A few I've seen online have great views and locations, but all young people in the pics. My husband and I would of course book a private room and not a 6 person bunk room.

We are in our mid 70's and have been using YHA for years and still do all over the world Never give up we are young at heart

Love your attitude to life! Way to go. There are always new experiences and new places to be found. :)

Thanks for the hint, we are not really looking for dubious night life, but maybe a place to enjoy a glass of wine and good meal and music, and then off to bed close by.

There are a couple of pub hotels with shared bath and bed and breakfast type accommodations for around the same price in holder historic buildings. Do you think one of these places or the YHA would be a better choice.

Mmmm think i'd stick to the YHA Rocks if that's the style of accom ur looking for. The Australian Hotel/Pub is just down the road - very popular for beer n pizza on the sidewalk at night - also has very basic accom but me thinks you will want some quiet esp on your 1st night in Sydney to sleep off the jet lag! There are quite a few boutique hotels in The Rocks as well which are reasonabley priced. Also note your cruise is in April - check when Easter is - always dearer at holiday time.

Forget about suggestions out of downtown like Potts Point, Darling Hbr etc -too far from ship if ur walking.

I mentioned Old Holiday Inn - it's well positioned and often has specials around $200 per room/night. Also has good views from rooftop pool.

Throw some hotel names at us.

I have stayed at the YHA at the Rocks and it was great. The room was basic but it was clean and secure. You need your key card to operate the lift and then to get into the hall door as well.

Here are some photos of a double room.

Security is a bit of an issue as we travel with a lap top and a camera and would want to feel that those things are safe in our room.

I understand that they have lockers at the YHA. I think those are for those who are in a dorm style room, but do you know if they would be available to use for things like an early arrival or late departure? We will most likely arrive Sydney first thing in the morning and it would be nice to be able to lock up our luggage if we can't get into our rooms.

Do you know how the lockers work? Is there a rented key or card key or do you need to bring a pad lock like you would at the gym?

I think that I want to stay at the Rocks, and from the reassurances I've gotten here, this seems like a very good choice. Other then the YHA I've been considering the following

http://www.australianheritagehotel.com/accom.html

http://www.greatsouthernhotel.com.au//Content.aspx?p=loc

The Great Southern is probably the worst location of the above.

I just called YHA The Rocks for you and your options would be to check your items into the Reception Desk or there are Lockers in a Locker room for $5 per day.

Hope this helps.

You are so nice to do that for me. As I get closer to the trip I may purchase some pre-paid Au long distance so I can start making those calls:D. But thank you thank thank you for letting me know.

Have a great day!

G'day again. Looks like you've been having fun searching!!

The Great Southern is located at the other end of downtown Sydney (2 miles) near China Town, close to rail and bus terminals -very convenient but lots of traffic, (Wake backpackers is almost opp). Good walking access to Paddy's Markets (cheap stuff), Cinema's, World Square for shops, Darling Harbour a little further on but all flat easy access. The hotel is old but clean -not a typical pub with accom type. No views. Taxi to ship.

Lord Nelson is very much a pub with some obligatory accom. Very historical - lots of ghost stories etc. Great spot for a drink and brews its own beer. Reasonable downhill access from there to either cruise terminals (Wharf 5 or Circular Quay).

The Australian (see photo on website home page) is exactly as you see it, and as i mentioned, a stone's throw from the YHA and you can see the sidewalk tables i mentioned. (Prob the best alternative). Don't expect porterage at these hotels though.

The Rocks is very historical but other than George St all buildings are located on the side of what was once a rocky elevated peninsula - hence its name.

i would not recommend the great southern hotel. the george street frontage is a pub/bar. the rooms look quite basic. location is not too bad as you are near the haymarket/chinatown area. walk to darling harbour area.

i would spend the extra A$20/night and go for the lord nelson or the heritage(for the period feel of the hotels which are also pubs/bars) or the more modern sydney harbour yha at the rocks(which is right next door to the heritage)
