If you are interested in what happened to the Delta Queen

She's a hotel in Chattanooga,Tennessee. We stayed on her last weekend in the Robert E Lee room. There are those that still hope she will cruise the rivers again, maybe she will. If not, she makes a lovely hotel. Small rooms, heating system not so great, but the charm of the antiques and wood paneling, helps you to over look those things.

i live very close too the mississippi and have seen alot of the paddleboats. we actually had races between several of them in the Davenport, Iowa/Rock Island, Il location. they were awesome too watch going down or up the river. it is so sad that they have turned most of them into a casino or hotel. there is some thing wonderful paddleing down on the river in the fall and seeing all the different colors of the trees. i miss seeing them.

New Orleans has the Natchez which does dinner cruises-it is a real paddle boat.

The enigneer of the Delta Queen ays they are hopeful she will cruise the rivers again-they have an investor, the biggest things is some of the laws congress has passed. Evenif she is not allowed overnight crusies, it would be nice if she at least did day cruises.

Chattanooga has a supposed paddle boat that does dinner cruises-but she is not real like the Delta Queen and the Natchez. I was onthe Natchez abotu 30 years ago-we are planning atrip to New Orleans-so I will crusie her again.

We really loved the Delta Queen and we will go stay on her again soon. Chattanooga is a nice small city with a good bit of things to do-a fun place for a weekend trip. We went to the aquarian and the Imax the next day after staying on the Delta Queen.

I'd like to know what has happened to DQ's sister ship Columbia Queen. I knew she was sailing under another name/s, but think that line/s also are gone now. We sailed CQ in the Pacific Northwest in 2002, when she was quite new. Beautiful ship, fun cruise. Anyone know if she is sailing at all and under what name/company?

The Mississippi Queen (built in early 70's) was scrapped back in 2008 I think. The Amercian queen is with the new line, "Great Amercian Steamboats," and will be doing cruises again this spring.

The only true sister ship, that was also built in 1926, was the Delta King. Orignally the 2 ships were ferrys between Los Angeles and Sacramento. The Delta King is now a hotel in Sacramento. I do not think the King was ever part of Delta Queen Steam Boat company. Maybe it was? Not sure. I believe both ships were used by the US Navy in World war II. I know Delta Queen was because the enigineer gave us her history and they had pics of her during World War II.

Our hotel package included a tour of the boat and talk by him.

My friend and I sailed from Cincinnatti to Nashville on the Delta Queen just a few months before she was taken out of service. Our cabin was on the top deck. When we opened the cabin door, we couldn't help but burst out laughing. The cabin was tiny, with a bunk bed and no place to sit. If we wanted to talk to each other, one of us had to sit on the bottom bunk, bending over so we wouldn't bump our head, and the other had to sit on the toilet. There was barely room to turn around in the bathroom. I got the top bunk and had to carry a wooden ladder over at night to climb up to the bunk. At night a crew member on fire duty walked across the roof of the cabins, sounding like Bigfoot.

We loved the Delta Queen, but every time we recall our first reaction to that miniscule cabin, we still burst out laughing. And yes, if she sails again, we'll be aboard.

Due to SOLAS regulations Delta Queen probably will never sail again, but she was saved from the scrapyard and the paddlewheelers are making a comeback with a new generation so it's not so bad all around.

Well they still employ an engineer to keep her in running condition. He said they had an investor-but it would still be 2 or 3 years away. Maybe just wishful thinking?
