Where to stay in San Juan

We stayed at the Sheraton, Old San Juan. It was nice hotel, very clean (not a 4 or 5 star hotel) and walking distance to the port. In the morning you can see the ship in port from the pool level on top of the hotel.

El Convento. It's in Old San Juan right in the middle of shopping etc. It's a historic building; use to house nuns. It had a beautiful courtyard, good food (bit pricey) a small pool on the rooftop overlooking the city. Also has a complimentary happy hour with numerous cheeses and wines.

It's definitely a splurge, but if you are going to be there several days, Hotel El Convento is a remarkable place. Right in the center of Old San Juan adjacent to the Cathedral, a historic building, and very, very nice.

We stayed there a few years ago and it is still one of our best memories of all our travels. Of course, the fact that we got an unexpected upgrade upon check-in didn't hurt, but the hotel itself is wonderful no matter what kind of room you get.

If you're up for a non traditional experience, I'd recommend staying at Posada San Francisco hostel. It's rated as the number two speciality lodging in San Juan. (When I booked about four months ago, it was number one.) It's not a hotel, so you gotta keep that in mind, but the prices are unbeatable! We paid 60 bucks for a room. There's cheaper ones, but we went with the 'deluxe' room. You can walk to the balcony and see the ship in the morning! It's not a far walk to the ship either. It's all downhill, and took us about 4-5 min to get to the ship. Such a beautiful view from the balcony too.

Definitely google Posada San Francisco and check it out, if you wanna save a few dollars and get a really great experience. The staff are really friendly too.
