Non-beach/ruin alternatives?

Hi! I'm looking for information on alternatives in Costa Maya beyond a beach day or visiting the ruins. We will be stopping here on our cruise in March, and we already have a shore excursion planned to see ruins in another port, as well as another beach day. It will be myself, my husband, and our DD (8 years old). Hubby doesn't like to just sit on the beach (he'd rather surf), and I'm not sure what else there is in Costa Maya that would appeal to an 8 year old.

Is it possible to just "wing it," so to speak? Is there an area where we can just walk around and check out shops, etc.?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
