We are going to pay cash for our charges (tips/purchases)...do we need to go to the desk the first day and put a deposit down or just pay at the end of the cruise?

They give you a short period of time to make a small amount of purchases before they cut you off. You need to make a deposit or back up using a credit card shortly after you board.

Here is what the Carnival website says about cash deposits.

Cash Deposit:

U.S. Currency and Traveler's Checks may be used to open your Sail & Sign Account. Once on board, please visit our Guest Services Desk who will gladly assist you in opening your account. Throughout the cruise, as you approach the deposit limit, our Guest Services Desk will notify you that additional money must be deposited.

"Recommended" deposits per sailing duration:

2-4 day cruises: $100 deposit pp

5-8 day cruises: $200 deposit pp

9+ day cruises: $350 deposit pp

Enjoy your cruise!! :)

You will need to go to the Purser's Desk immediately upon boarding your ship to put your deposit down on your Sail & Sign card. Otherwise, you won't be able to make any purchases with it! We always put cash down on our cards. And there is no required amount that is needed. Carnival has RECOMMENDATIONS for your deposit, but it is entirely up to you. Once your account gets low, they will notify you and all you need to do is put more money down. IF you have any money left in your account at the end of the cruise, you will receive a check in that amount before leaving the ship.

Sail & Sign Card

  • You will receive your Sail & Sign Card when you first check-in at your port of departure.
  • "Sail & Sign" is Carnival's onboard cashless credit program, which allows you to charge all your services, gratuities and purchases during your cruise to your cabin. Your Sail & Sign Card is also your cabin key.
  • All locations on board will accept your Sail & Sign Card for payment; the casino will also accept cash.
  • A credit card or cash deposit is needed to establish your Sail & Sign account. The initial credit card hold is: $100 for a 2-4 day cruise, $200 for a 5-8 day cruise, and $350 for a 9 day or longer cruise. These amounts are also recommended, but not required, for those doing a cash deposit. You have 24 hours to place cash on your account once you are checked in. You can still use your Sail & Sign card for purchases during those 24 hours (up to $50 total). You can put your cash deposit down while checking in before embarking or at the Guest Services desk once onboard. The line at the Guest Services desk to place cash on your account can be quite long immediately after boarding, it may be worth waiting till later since you can still use your card for 24 hours. The Guest Services desk is open 24 hours a day. You can set spending limits and check the status of your account at any time.
  • Keep track of your spending, mistakes can be made. On some ships there is "Interactive TV" in the cabins. This system also allows you to review the status of your Sail & Sign Account.
  • Your Sail & Sign Card also serves as your Boarding Card. This card identifies you as a Carnival guest and must be carried with you along with your picture ID when you go ashore. Because the ship is closed to the public while docked at the various ports-of-call, you’ll have to show your Sail & Sign Card and picture ID to the officer on duty in order to reboard the ship.

Another option is prior to sailing you can buy funship dollars(gift card) from the Bon Voyage Dept. and in the address part put OBC and will be applied prior to sailing so you don't have to fight the crowds at pruser desk right away. We buy some every week or two prior to sailing so it is less cash to carry. Just a thought.
