No problem cashing travelers checks on board however if you try and use them off the ship you may have a problem with purchases. More and more stores are not accepting them anymore due to so many other types of payment.

Travellers Cheques are going the way of the Do-Do Bird here in North America (doubtful if most folks under 35 would even know what one was if they were presented with one as a method of payment) Plus, they are expensive... and incur FEES to purchase, and in some cases even FEES to cash. Which is why most Travellers now are using ATMs to access foreign currency... very low Currency Conversion Fees (0 to 3% is the norm on top of the Posted Exchange Rates) and some Banks even offer NO Transaction Fees for their Customers or those that they have an "International Agreement" with (look for those Network Logos on the back of whatever card you put into an ATM to get Cash at home)... Consult your Bank / Financial Institution for more info. BUT, I will say this for Travellers Cheques, they make for an EXCELLENT Emergency Financial Back-Up Plan (something everyone should have when on vacation... a "What Will We Do If Plan") ... because they can be replaced if Lost or Stolen, and in most places in the world in under 24 Hours. Hope this is helpful, Cheers!

I used to say they are going the way of the telegram which are now gone...American Express I think are still free depending on the type of card you have but it is correct that they are expensive... Sloop-JohnB Posted February 1, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 1, 2012 Do do bird is good. I used to say they are going the way of the telegram which are now gone... TO DKJRETIRED, Lol, Telegram is good... but I think that most kids today (mine included in their 20s and 30s) could see a Telegram and grasp what it was... as it is similar to other types of communications we still have (such as Faxes). Put a Travellers Cheque in their hands as a cashier and I can assure you they wouldn't have a clue... the closest they could associate it to would be a Personal Cheque... and fewer fewer places accept those any more either. And I know a lot of banks now that don't even issue Personal Cheques to their customers any longer. The 3 most common ways of paying for items these days in North America are... Cash, Credit and Debit (and not always in that order)... For example, here in Canada where we are known to be one of the largest users (adapters) of technology on the planet... most folks now ONLY use plastic... Debit Cards & Swipe Cards / Wands (Pay Passes) are by far the most common way to make a purchases in Canada even for small items like coffee. And we reload / pay-off by using the Computer... for most of us even Cash is going the way of the Do-Do. Cheers!

libno Posted February 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 2, 2012 We are on the Celebrity summit and would like to know if they cash travelers checks. We would like to have some cash but don't want to carry tons of cash around. A word of caution ..... I took Travellers checks(for my shipboard account because I didn't want to use my canadian dollar visa), and made the mistake of depositing all of them to my shipboard account, and then thought, I would "withdraw" cash from that account every time I wanted to go to the casino, or, at the ports. Well, I was told, my withdrawing MY money would cost me a service charge because the ship is not a bank and doesn't do this kind of thing. If I wanted to charge drinks etc. to my shipboard account - NO PROBLEM. But if I wanted CASH out of my shipboard account, which had my $3000- in travellers checks deposited into it, I would have to pay a service charge!!! I was outraged, and complained to everyone I could. They finally gave me a one time withdrawal of $500- and told me I could collect the balance on the last day of the cruise!!!! I was not happy, and don't do that anymore.
