Car rental Anchorage

Family illness has delayed my booking a car for our week-long independent land portion. Anyone have pearls of wisdom for reasonable rate? I know AK is expensive, but all the usual avenues of getting discounts don't seem to apply for June 21-28 this year.

Try Priceline. Have you looked at Thrifty, Payless, Dollar, National, Alamo? All are at the airport. Expect 25%+++ in taxes.

I booked Avis in downtown Anchorage for $64/day high season. The cruise buses usually drop you off at the Egan Center/downtown, and you can walk right around the corner and find Avis. What I found is a lot of the specials you can't get at the airport, you can still get at the downtown location.

Thanks, Tetleytea. That's about the rate I got as well. I will try Priceline to see if I can beat it. So many of the codes and discounts didn't apply in the Anchorage market.....no surprise there, I guess, and I am late in booking.

Prices have already gone up for the reason. We got a $269 a week rate from Alamo back in October for travel this June/July. I priced it last week with an Alamo coupon and with the proportionate increase in other fees and taxes, it would cost over $300 more.

But keep an eye on Alamo, they often run their $149/week specials. I have gotten them the last two years out of Anchorage. Get on their specials email list.
