abatlin Posted February 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2012 Does anyone know anything about trains from Civitavecchia? How far is the train station from port, do we take a taxi and approx. what is the cost? We will be spending 3 nights in Lucca, then either flying out of Pisa or Florence. What are the trains like to get to these airports? which is easiest?
euro cruiser Posted February 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2012 Does anyone know anything about trains from Civitavecchia? What are the trains like to get to these airports? which is easiest? The train station in Civitavecchia is about five short blocks from the entrance of the cruise port. It's an easy walk. To go from Civitavecchia to Lucca by train will take between 2.5 - 3.5 hours, depending on the trains and the connection. It will require changing trains at Pisa Centrale. It is much, much easier to get to the Pisa airport from Lucca. It's closer, and there is a train station in the airport. For Florence you'd need to take the train into town and then a bus or taxi out to the airport. From Lucca to the Pisa airport takes less than an hour by train, but also requires changing trains at Pisa Centrale.
abatlin Posted February 19, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted February 19, 2012 Thank you for your helpful response. Because of train changes, would it be easier to rent a car in Pisa? Is there any other interesting sites to visit out of Lucca being able to maximize the use of car rental?
euro cruiser Posted February 19, 2012 #4 Share Posted February 19, 2012 Many of the towns in Tuscany are hill towns and they are much easier to see by car than by train. You can pick up a rental car right in Civitavecchia and take your time driving up to Lucca, and then have the freedom to travel around the area. If you are interested in marble you can easily drive up to Carrara, or you could head south to Siena, or east to Pistoia and/or Montecatini Terme (a spa town) ... there are so many great options. From Civitavecchia to Lucca by car is about 3.5 - 4 hours along the coast.
