higcat Posted February 22, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2012 We are taking the Westerdam from San Diego to Vancouver May 8 for 3 nights. Does anyone know if there will be a formal night during this time? And how formal is formal for HAL? I've done Carnival and Norwegian cruises but this is our first HAL. Thank you for any answers. jtl513 Posted February 22, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2012 Since that's the tail end of a 13-day repo from FL you might catch the last formal night. You can find out around Mar 19, when you're able to print your edocs. It will show on the first page how many formal night, if any. Minimum formal on HAL for guys is a jacket, dress shirt, and tie. For ladies it's a nice cocktail tail dress or better. "Evening dress falls into two distinct categories; Formal or Smart Casual. Smart Casual can be defined as slacks and sports shirt or sweater for men and skirt or trousers and sweater or blouse for women. Printed T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours. On festive Formal evenings, ladies wear a cocktail dress or gown and gentlemen wear a suit and tie or tuxedo. There are approximately two formal nights per seven days and three formal nights per ten days."

One may dress in Smart Casual to dine in the Lido & Canaletto on formal night! ;)
