EVA air

We are planning a trip to SE Asia and EVA Air, a Taiwan airline, has been suggested and it appears to be less expensive than Singapore, Cathay Pacific, etc.

I know you get what you pay for but could anyone relate their experiences with EVA, both in economy and Business.

Thanks.

I haven't flown on EVA before, but my boss does when he flies to Taiwan which is quite often (though he usually flies 1st or business class when he can). He travels a lot and for domestic flights, he uses United, but for trips to Taiwan, it's EVA Air.

EVA is 1 of the 2 Taiwanese airlines (the other being China Airlines) and has a pretty good safety record. Since I haven't flown on EVA before, I can't speak towards the service, but I imagine it is pretty good.

I know - my two cents isn't very helpful!

I have flown EVA last summer (July 2011) from LAX to BKK. I was satisfied with them as an airline and would not hestiate to fly them again. I flew in Economy.

If you are worried about Economy, you can look into Economy Plus. Seats are more expensive, but you do get a little bit more room.

Many of my family members live in Bangkok, and they use EVA constantly in their Economy Plus seats.

While EVA is not Thai Airways, I wouldn't have a problem recommending EVA to anyone, and I've flown Thai, EVA, Korean, China, and JAL

And I had no problems communicating with anyone in English. If you layover in Taiwan, the airport is nice enough and for me, the time between flights was minimal.

Good airline. Not on the level of Cathay or Singapore Air, especially in Business Class, but still probably better than any of the US airlines for a trans-Pacific.

I fly EVA all the time, mostly on their Elite class (premium economy), and but have experienced their economy class. My last business class experience was 12 years ago, so it may not be relevant now.

I always enjoy flying with them. If you can afford the premium economy, go for it. Seats are more spacious: 2-4-2 configuration, as opposed to 3-4-3 in the economy (for the Boeing 747). It's usually less busy in the premium economy too, they're not usually very full. Economy cabin is more cramped, and seem to always fully booked. Flight attendants are always very friendly. Food was okay, used to be better in the past, but so much anymore. Still edible though.

I fly from LAX to Taipei frequently and there are only 2 airlines that offers non-stop flights between LAX-TPE: Eva Air and China Airlines. I choose either airlines based on the fares offered for the dates I want to travel mainly because the services (friendliness, cleanliness, food, on-board entertainment) both airlines provide are about the same. Safety issue is rather random and it is often not within our control, so I don't factor it into when I choose either airlines.

China Airlines is more generous with their frequent flyers program while Eva Air is more stingy about it.

The only thing I can complain about both airlines is the poor English that the announcements (apart from the captain), mainly the stewardesses, make while onboard. One would think that this is something they can practice and perfect, but 60% of the time, I don't understand a word they are saying.

Eva Air does have something that none of the airlines in the world has--the HELLO KITTY planes. Google Eva Hello Kitty planes and you will see lots of photos on these specialty flights.

You have to book on certain flights and on certain days to be on the Hello Kitty plane. My kids have been on them and they loved it! There is even Hello Kitty print on the toilet paper.

Although it is a Taiwanese airline, you can feel as comfortable as any other international airlines flying the same routes.

Hope this information helps.

We flew EVA in 2011, from San Francisco to Taipei, on our way to Vietnam. Our seats were in business. We enjoyed the flight. Very clean planes, good cabin service and on time departure. While not the same as Cathay business class, the prices were lower. The only issue I noticed was the EVA terminal business lounge was very crowded.

I have flown EVA and I'm flying them again this October.

I heard that Cathay Pacific seats are quite uncomfortable. Singapore, I heard has good service. But be warn that there are a lot of Indians on Singapore and Cathay. For some, they would know what i mean by that phrase.

If you mean the slidey-forward hard-shell seats in economy, I think they're being removed from the fleet. But you'd have to go to a specialist board to find out the current state of play.

Do you mean more than on EVA? There are plenty of airlines in this part of the world which cater to that clientele.

From many I talk to even Indians themselves said they take Singapore or Cathay Pacific because their hub for transfer is Hong Kong or Singapore.

The EVA Air Lounge at San Francisco SFO (also used by Air New Zealand) is the smallest and crappiest Business Lounge I have ever come across .

The best Eva Air lounge is in Taipei. They actually have different lounges for Gold card members and Silver card members. Silver card members only has lounge privileges in Taiwan, but not overseas. But in Taipei, the Silver card members get to sit in an outside area (not a separate room) that was cornered off by some ropes. There is a simple sandwich, snack, and drinks area. Gold card members will have access to lounges overseas and a large, newly renovated lounge in Taipei, if one flies there. I believe, in airports of other cities, Eva always use other airlines' lounges.

Flew on Eva last week, non-stop in Economy class R/T from JFK to Taipei. I was pleased with the service and the flight attendants do try to speak in English. The air on-board is a bit cool but I prefer it over dry, warm conditions, at least they provide warm blankets. The one thing I was surprised at is that no overnight kit is provided (i.e. slippers, toothbrush, face wipe, etc) even though the flight was 15 hours. Drinks and snacks are kept in the rear galley between mealtimes.

Great lay-flat seats in Royal Laurel (business), wonderful service, but food...not up to par with Cathay, ANA, or Asiana. Cute amenity kit (Rimowa). EVA lounge in TPE is one of the best lounges we've been, especially the section named "Infinity", I believe. Shower in one of the four shower rooms in the "Infinity" (not the Star) even if you have to wait for your turn.
