abenaki Posted March 4, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2012 It has been 15 years since I took the train from Venice to Rome.... at that time we had lunch in the Dining Car and it was very enjoyable... Just wondering what it is like now.
pete_coach Posted March 4, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 4, 2012 Not all trains have a "dining" car anymore. You need to check with the specific train you are traveling on. All trains (Eurostar) have a resturant car where yu can buy food. A lot of good, up to date information on the roninrome dot com forward slash transportation/traveling-from-rome-to-venice-the-train-is-usually-better-than-the-plane site. There are some good links there.. roninrom dot com/%20transportation/1st-class-versus-2nd-class

Podie Posted March 4, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 4, 2012 When I made this trip last year, there was only a snack bar area which sold beer, wine, and some snacks. Most people seemed to bring their food in with them.
Rare pkt1976 Posted March 5, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 5, 2012 I'm taking the train from Venice to Rome in October so I'm interested in input as well :)
CathyCruises Posted March 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Options were minimal last time we were on--not that route, but in Italy in November--you could get a coffee, beer or wine, and some chips, or candy, but not much else. We usually buy something in the station at one of the stands there and eat at the table at our seats. The Rome-Venice line may have have more to choose from, but I wouldn't want to rely on it. The_Big_M Posted March 5, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Venice isn't a great place to be picking up a bite before a decent journey either. Costly, not a big selection and might not have anything open depending on departure time. There are different trains on that route but if you take the Frecciargento it should have a dining area. A 3 course meal costs around 30-35E (~17-20E for a main). Other services like Intercity as mentioned will just have a bar with biscuits, sandwiches, chocolates, chips and hot and cold drinks. mygreyhound66 Posted March 5, 2012 #8 Share Posted March 5, 2012 We did this trip in November - Venice to Rome, we stopped and purchased bread/salami's/mustard. Also purchased wine, water and some chips. We had a marvellous picnic whilst enjoying the fabulous countryside whizzing past us!
cberge Posted March 5, 2012 #9 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Actually, if you leave in the AM you can have breakfast before you leave and then luncheon in Rome. Or lucheon before you go and dinner in Rome. The eurostar has a decent snack bar compared to other trains IMHO.Just my thought for the day:)
