Copenhagen Itinerary - 1 1/2 days

Recommended Posts

We'll be arriving on a Saturday morning at 7:15 AM and board the Eurodam the next afternoon. We are staying at the Hotel Clarion Mayfair by the train station, and we're traveling with my husband's parents, who may prefer to avoid a lot of walking after a redeye flight.

I'd love some feedback on our possible itineraries (are things grouped in a reasonable way? is there a card of some sort that would make our planned sights cheaper? will metro or bus be available between these sights?):

v Breakfast, walk up Stroget to Nyhaven, 1 hr canal tour with Netto, lunch, Resistance Museum (Tivoli if any energy after dinner). Next morning: National Museum, Rosenburg Castle, board Eurodam.

v OR Breakfast, 10:30 Walking Tour, lunch, metro to Nyhaven for 1 hr canal tour, Resistance Museum. Same second day.

Here are some quick details about the sites we're considering:

v Walking Tour with Richard Karpen DD

Romantic Copenhagen 90 minute walk at 10:30 on Saturday morning. Guide dressed as Hans Christian Anderson will provide overview of history, economy, government, religion. Meet at the tourist office near the main train station, close to our hotel. A little over 1 mile walk at comfortable pace, ending at Our Savior’s Church. (Could then eat lunch and take metro to Canal Boat Tour). 75 kroner/10 euros/$12.

v Canal Boat Tour, Netto-badene D (in the scenic Nyhavn section)

If walking from hotel, we’d walk up Europe's first pedestrian street, Strøget (pronounced stroy-et). Copenhagen's Nyhaven, or "New Harbor," is actually steeped in a long heritage. Colorful buildings line the canal and hint at a history of small-vessel traffic. The Canal Boat Tour, which has glowing reviews, is 60 min with an English speaking guide. 30 kroner.

v Resistance Museum DD (past where the canal boat is)

Exhibitions here chronicle the Danish people's response to the **** occupation from 1940 to 1945. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and offers free guided tours in English from June to August on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Free.

v Tivoli DD D (close to hotel. If anyone has energy left, it’s supposed to be pretty at night)

From mid-April to mid-September, a world-class amusement park comes to life in the center of Copenhagen. More than two dozen rides await you, in addition to live entertainment and more than 30 eateries. 85 kroner.

v National Museum DD D (somewhat close to hotel)

If your rambles whet your appetite for history, visit the excellent National Museum to trace Danish civilization from its ancient beginnings. Signs in English explain the story clearly. Mingle with mummified Vikings still clothed and armed for battle. Housed in an 18th century mansion at the center of Copenhagen, the Nationalmuseet offers self-guided tours. Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free guided tours in English at 11 a.m. June through September on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Free. Take a 10DKK coin as a deposit on the key for the locker.

v Rosenborg Castle DD D (not close to anything else)

This country-home-turned royal residence is emblematic of Dutch Renaissance style. Visit for the day to learn about the long history of Danish royalty. Open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with longer hours in warmer months. 70 kroner.

Hi VAtravelers

Copenhagen is just a magnificent city and very easy to get around in. We walked from place to place as most of the attractions are in a sort of 2 mile radius. From the Little Mermaid, to the Canal Boat tour, to Tivoli Gardens to Rosenborg Castle, walking is a wonderful way to see so much more.

There are many books about Copenhagen, or just email the Copenhagen tourist office and they will send you many wonderful and useful items to help make your stay there that much nicer.

Here are a few of our pix of Copenhagen to help get you acclimated

Copenhagen's main attraction is the Little Mermaid, sitting just in the harbor

From here it is an easy walk to the Nyhavn section for the Canal Boat tour. Spend some time wondering about this wonderful section.

You get a completely different view of Copenhagen from the canals

From here it isn't a far walk to Town Hall Square, probably the main Square in Copenhagen. Getting there you should walk thru the Stroget, a pedestrian waking mall of several blocks all filled with shops of all types. In town Hall square,

Tivoli is right across the street. You can also grab a pix with the Hans Christian Anderson statue

Rosenborg castle is not that far away from here. Be sure to spend some time wandering about the rose gardens also

Hope this helps some

Cheers

We 60-somethings also used the HOHO bus last summer in Copenhagen. Got on the bus in front of the Scandia Palace Hotel next to City Hall. It took us to Rosenborg, the Little Mermaid, the Botanical Gardens, Nyhavn, etc. Easy, easy to do. Just get off walk around, see the sights, get back on at the same stop unless you've walked a considerable distance...then consult the bus route map. The driver let us off one place, told us where to walk, where to get a hotdog (a must-do for lunch) across from the Resistance Museum, and told us where he would pick us up. Study the city map a bit before you go.
