CALLING ALL JAXPAX 4/11 CC'ERS - WE HAVE AN ISSUE TO DISCUSS!!

Hey Guys!

CindyG found out the other day that cruisers on another X ship missed a major port just like we did when we had to forgo Ocho Rios. They all rec'd a $100 onboard credit as compensation. We got the free booze. I know I only got two of the drinks of the day for my inconvenience. Do we want to try for the credit on a future cruise? Jump on and make your views known.

OK now, I put this up because CindyG and a couple of others said let's check it out. Don't leave me out here all by myself! Eighty people have looked, but not one person has commented? It doesn't matter to me, we just need to decide.

Hi, tuggers. I called Celeb, talked to two people. They both said, no credit because Celeb had to pay the charges to the port anyway. I read that also somewhere on this board so it may be true. Who knows?

We didn't really mind missing the port, because we had not p[lanned to get off the ship anyway but it was sad for the crew who were expecting to see their families before going off to New York for six months.

BTW, how are you feeling?

Here is our experince on the Century. The ship sat dead in the water for four hours outside of Nassau. There were disel fumes in the hallways and most elevators weren't working. We were offered free cocktails before each dinner seating. It was obnoxious watching people at the pool ordering 12 beers at a time. Most of us were happy ordering a cocktail at the expence of the the cruiseline. We were offered a cabin credit for $125. which we thought was more than generous. Others have said that we were overcompensated, I say Celebrity came thru as we expect them to.

I have beem trying to get answers....but no one seems to know. What does Celebrity pay in port charges at each port? How are the charges incured? Day of the week? Time of year? Size of cruiseship? Number of passengers? Are the charges paid, if the cruiseship does not dock? Do charges vary from port to port?
From there, questions are....who decides and how is it decided what is offered to the passengers?
It seems to vary vastly. Some get credits of $100.00 or $125.00 according to posts. I know one couple at our dinner table got a $100.00 cabin credit for no obvious reason or explanation.
My contention is that everyone should be treated the same....free drinks, or cabin credit, unless there is a clear reason for the difference.
I am a shareholder and 10 year Capt.'s Club member. I plan to get some answers. PS, I do love Celebrity, but what is fair is fair.

Oh yea, I forgot BT.....offer something for free and the passengers become crude and have no class. It happened on ours. People were not even tipping the servers....which brings up other issues. When Celebrity announces "free drink hours" how is the staff compensated? We tipped our server, I felt bad for them having to deal with the cadish behavior of the follow pax.

cindyg you go girl! I, too felt sorry for the servers! I would much rather have a cabin credit than have to view the spectacle we saw of people pushing up to the bar and ordering four and five drinks at the time! It was disgusting!

Hi all:

One of the interesting things about missing Ocho Rios is that someone lied to us about Montego Bay. If you recall we were told that Montego Bay was also closed so we couldn't go there. A bunch of Jaxpax including Sharon and I took a private Stingray City tour at Grand Cayman that had pax from the Costa ship that was beside us at Ocho Rios and left at the same time we did. They pulled right into Montego Bay for the day. Said there was no problem, they docked and there was room at the dock for more. Now there's no way of knowing whether the "agent" at Montego Bay lied to our ship or our ship decided not to be truthful with us. I can't blame Celebrity for us having to miss Ocho Rios. There's no way you'd want to try boarding a tender in that sea, however they could have taken us to Mo Bay. That would have been sufficient compensation for me.

Hi Tuggers:

Sorry, no, I don't feel Celebrity is financially responsible for the missed port. I don't know what the circumstances were for them supplying $100 for the one CindyG heard about but I feel in our case they were not responsible. We couldn't tender in those waters and that was not Celebrity's fault, that was an Act of God. It would have been irresponsible to try to land us in those conditions. Also, I don't know what port charges are per pax but they aren't $100. If they were, on our cruise, Nassau, Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Costa Maya and Jacksonville, that would be $600 per pax. You're not likely to run a cruise on what's left if you paid those kinda of charges. It's more likely less than $20 per pax, probably $10. So whatever they might save on port charges (if they aren't required to pay whether they land or not)probably works out to less than a couple of drinks per pax. One could argue that its unfair to non-drinkers for everyone to be compensated with free drinks and I would agree. Maybe they should have given every pax one free 8 x 10 photo. Lord knows they throw most of them away every cruise.

Anyway IMHO I think we should save our demands for credit for issues that the cruise line was culpable for, was responsible for, or should have been able to prevent. It was a great cruise. I feel Celebrity delivered what they could, when they were able, and I didn't feel short-changed.

I would have not complained if each passenger and each cruise was handled in the same manner. I totally agree, it is clearly in the docs about missing ports, liability, etc. I too feel that Celebrity owes me nothing for the missing port. However, I am upset that one person gets something and others do not. I also do not find it fair that one cruise gets $100 and another $125, unless it is based on the length of the cruise, cost of the cabin, etc. What I really want to know is who decides and what criteria is the decision based as to what is offered. I am looking at both sides, as a passenger and a shareholder. The other point being if the passengers are upset, it could hurt future bookings, they could tell other potential cruisers, and so on.

Cindy, actually ours was only a 7 day cruise but we were doing a b/b but that had nothing to do with our reimbursment as everyone received the same thing. It was my understanding that the Captain decides on how to make his passengers happy.

If anyone knows how they figure port charges, please let me know.
The 3 day sailing of the Monarch making only one port of call at Ensenada, has port charges of about $21. The 4 night cruise with ports of call at Ensenada, San Diego and Catalina, has port charges of about $19. It's all very confusing.
As far as compensation for a missed port, I recieved a full refund for my Majesty cruise during November of 2002 and a free cruise certificate for another cruise. About 1400 passengers were stranded overnight on Coco Cay because of an unexpected change in the weather that prevented tendering them back to the ship till the next morning. We missed Key West as a result, as we were still at Coco Cay when we were supposed to be at Key West.
Most people were very happy with the compensation and also the free drinks from about 11AM till 6PM on the day the passengers returned to the ship from Coco Cay. I was very happy especially after a few hours of free drinks.
Now for the kicker, since everyone on the ship was given the same package, some of the passengers who were stranded on the island thought they should have been given more than the people who stayed on the ship. It just goes to show, some people will never be happy, no matter what you give them.
I just find it unbelievable that anyone could recieve a full refund (including port charges and taxes) for a cruise, another cruise for free (including port charges and taxes) and an open bar for 7 hours and still complain.

Hi guys,
I found you! I agree that all compensation should be equal across the board. Granted that as a shareholder I don't want the company to lose anything, (shares are down enough at the start of this quarter) but I feel that if they don't treat everyone equal that will be the long term outcome. One hundred dollars in an onboard credit will add much more than that back to the ship/line's revenue in what is put back in the casino, bars, profit off the rooms, ect. Count us in on whatever you all decide.
Hey Earl,
It's good to see you online!

I have emailed and sent a letter through the USPS. I know for a fact that one couple at our dinner table recieved a "mystery credit" of $100.00. I don't know if it was because of the missed port. The printouts do not specify. It does not take a genius to tell from the posts on this board that people are not being treated evenly or fairly. I can understand the credit being in direct proportion with the price of the cabin/suite. It just seems that some people are treated one way....others something different with no appearent reason. I do not expect anything for a missed port....I have read the docs and disclaimers. But how the ^*)%@ can it be justified to treat the pax differently on the same cruise....or from cruise to cruise for that matter. I also am looking at this as a shareholder too, and the disatisfaction on this board causes some concern.

Hi Cindy G, Tuggers, Larry_S_Taco, et al

That $100 credit your tablemates got probably had nothing to do with the missed port! Just before the cruise we found an internet coupon for $100 that was applicable to our cruise and applied for and got it. It's likely that either they did as well and forgot or their TA applied for it on their behalf unbeknownst to them.

Richsea,
Try this analogy: We both get off the ship in Hawaii and go to the car rental area. I give them my coupon and get a midsize car for $47.00. You give them the same coupon and the same money but you get an economy car. When you ask why they don't give you an explaination, but say they are substituting a free drink ticket instead. Nevermind the fact that you don't drink. Would you be happy?
