Bsan1221 Posted April 28, 2005 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2005 What can be done in Skagway or Ketchikan..??? I booked today a trip in Juneau with NorthStar Trekking to do the Extreme Hiking, which includes climbing, hiking and a helicopter ride. Now what can be done in Skagway??? I know they have a dog sledding and helicopter ride in Skagway but its 399.00 with TEMSCO and I dont want to spend that much if I am already going on a helicopter ride elsewhere. Is there just dog sledding with something else to be done??? Has anyone done the Horseback Adventure in Juneau??? Also, what can be done in Ketchikan??? THanks

wolfie11 Posted April 28, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 28, 2005 The information and reservations on the Chilkoot horseback site are for 2004. If they were operational this year, they should have 2005 up by now....
Yukon Posted April 28, 2005 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2005 Chilkoot Horseback is in Dyea (Skagway), not Juneau. Murray
Bsan1221 Posted April 28, 2005 Author #7 Share Posted April 28, 2005 Can anyone give me any comments on what I posted at the top of this topic.
Budget Queen Posted April 29, 2005 #8 Share Posted April 29, 2005 A room mate went on the Dyea horseback riding- would not recommend it. Superior with consistant raves is Joni's out of Carcross. Southeast tours has a tour. As for the tour listings- what are YOUR interests??? Pick your top 5 and then you will get input for your preferences. :)
Bsan1221 Posted April 29, 2005 Author #9 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Dear Buget Queen: This is what I have narrowed down. Please keep in mind that the hubby and I LOVE ADVENTURE and we are in our EARLY TWENTIES (20'S) . :D Ketchikan: Whiskey Cove Kayaking Join an experienced Alaskan kayak guide for a 2-hour adventure on Ketchikan's unique waterfront. 2.50 hours $74.00 Tatoosh Island Sea Kayaking Paddle in and around this serene and unique island environment. 4.00 hours $134.00* Backcountry 4x4 Jeep & Canoe Safari Experience adventure and excitement as you drive through the rugged back roads of Revillagigedo Island in a 4-wheel drive Jeep Wrangler® to join your companions in a 20-passenger Indian-style canoe. 4.00 hours $139.00* In SKAGWAY Klondike Rock Climbing & Rappelling Adventure Professional mountain guides with world expedition experience will lead you on an exciting climbing adventure over the smooth granite walls of the White Pass. 3.00 hours 94.00 Dogsled & Glacier Flightseeing Combine 3 tours into one, and experience Alaska's favorite sport, dog sledding. 2.00 hours $419.00* The Dogsled and Glacier Flightseeing sounds great but its very, very, very pricey. We already taking a helicopter ride in Juneau that includes a trek and hiking with NorthStar Trekking. Has anyone done the flight tour on separate ports??? Is there something that just has dogsleadding and maybe SNOW MOBILING??????????????????? Thank you sooo much ahead of time for the input :p
Bsan1221 Posted April 29, 2005 Author #10 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Where did you find the Horseback Adventure? Who is offering it? I was scheduled through Princess, but was notified recently that it was cancelled. :( Thanks, From what I gather it looks like they are not operational this year.. HOWEVER, it is still on Carnivals list of excursions..
Budget Queen Posted April 29, 2005 #11 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Kayaking is just a wonderful choice in Ketchikan but consider direct booking for a more personal tour with Southeast Kayaks. Glacier dog sledding gets consistant raves- having done real dog sledding I have to also agree, it's a unique Alaska tour to consider. But your trekking choice is just excellent, and I know you will have a great time. :) Enjoy Alaska!
Bsan1221 Posted April 29, 2005 Author #12 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Dear Budget Queen: Can I book dog sleeding with OUT the helicopter ride???? and if so which company do you recommend.???? Also, which Kayaking tour do you get to see the most natural sights??? Mountains, glaciers, etcc..?? ;) By the way, thanks for all the input... Your the BEST!!! :D :D
laughing husky Posted April 29, 2005 #13 Share Posted April 29, 2005 If you want to do something that is not a ship tour...rent a car in Skagway and drive to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. It is a great little town, and you can see the best sled dog kennel in the world. It is Frank Turner's Muktuk Kennel. He has morning and afternoon tours and a short hike with the dogs. He is an amazing man who has participated in every Yukon Quest long distance dog race since it started. He has a great web site. check it out. laughing husky Posted April 29, 2005 #14 Share Posted April 29, 2005 You can't "dog sled" in the summer without snow...However, some places will take you in a wheeled cart around a short trail. If you go to the glacier, you really "mush" on snow. It is where many of the kennels send their dogs to give them exeercixe and get them out of the heat. I dont wanna pay money for that. I have seen pictures you sit on a sleigh type thing and you do dog sledding. What does MUSH mean?
wolfie11 Posted April 29, 2005 #16 Share Posted April 29, 2005 It is believed that "mush" is from the french "marche" which, loosely translated, means 'get going'. Another legacy from the French-Canadian voyageurs.

Budget Queen Posted April 30, 2005 #18 Share Posted April 30, 2005 No way around a snow dog sledding without a helicopter. I see the cart rides are now over $100?? Yikes, not on my list either, they were Ok when it was $30 a few years ago and superior for carts is definately Seavey's out of Seward- save your money. :)
