Eastern Med Passport question

Hello, Can anyone tell me if we need to take our passports with us when we visit ports in Greece and Croatia? Can we just take copies?

Passports are usually collected at the beginning of your cruise and returned prior to arriving at those countries requiring visa entry, such as Lebanon, Israel and Egypt. You won't need them for Greece and Croatia.

We just returned from an Eastern Mediterranean cruise two weeks ago on the Costa Fortuna. Italy, Greece and Croatia. They collected our passports (US) at the beginning of the cruise. Then we had to pick them up to go ashore in Croatia and then turn them back in when we got back on the ship. Then collect them again the morning we disembarked. A little bit of a hassle, but not too bad. Anyway, it was kind of nice not to have to worry about whether we should take them ashore at other places since we didn't have them. Only place we needed them was Dubrovnik.
