amcjeep4life Posted May 3, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 3, 2012 A group of 4 of us will be in Grand Cayman in October. 2 of us have been there, 3 of us have done the Stingray thing (here and in Grand Turk) and the other is afraid of water (don't ask!). We want to wander the island, but we have 2 specific things we want to see. One is Hell, the other is the Tortuga factory. Is there a specific tour company we can contact, or is it easy enough to just get a taxi to these places? We will actually be the only ship in port that day (weird, huh?), so I'm guessing they will be begging for business. Any input from anyone out there will be appreciated! curacaoqueen Posted May 3, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 3, 2012 The Tortuga factory isn't anything special, it's near the airpot and you look thru a window where they make the cakes.
amcjeep4life Posted May 4, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted May 4, 2012 No samples? Any other suggestions?
drew sailbum Posted May 4, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2012 The Tortuga Rum Factory makes Rum CAKES. The rum is not made on island. Some shops do offer samples of the various flavors of rum cake.
curacaoqueen Posted May 4, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2012 At Tortuga you can sample the rums too, you might walk away with a buzz.
jlajla Posted May 8, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 8, 2012 The factory is nothing special, honestly. As for Hell, it is basically a little block of land with some odd-looking rocks and a post-office, so you can send a postcard from hell. I would NOT waste my time with Hell unless you are really hell-bent (bad pun) on it. Very VERY unexciting. Hmm... what else for non-water people? There is a botanical garden on the east side of the island that is really nice, but I'm not sure how long the cab ride would be. Also the turtle farm if any of you are into that. If you are VERY adventurous and want to see the island, rent a car. It is very easy to navigate the island, but remember that they drive on the left side of the road. ;) Enjoy, whatever your decide. Rare DragonOfTheSeas Posted May 9, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 9, 2012 The last time we were there we took a tour of the island from one of the taxi drivers on the pier. (small van) It was very interesting and reasonable. It included Hell and several other stops. One stop that was very good was where people swam with the dolphins. It was very inexpensive to swim. (this is usually a very $$$ activity) We only watched--but, enjoyed it. It is directly across from where you see the giant Sea Turtles. Half of our group went there. At the end of the tour they dropped us off a 7 mile beach--but, we could have gone back to the ship. This might have some interest for al of you. Have fun!
