$1 bills - how many are enough?

We will be on a 7 night Caribbean (Legend) cruise.

 

Everyone says to bring $1 bills for tipping and that it's just nice to have these smaller bills.

 

We don't drink alcohol, so won't need to tip for drinks. But we will probably use the room service on occasion. And we'll tip a couple bucks to room steward to bring us extra pillows. But I'm not sure where else we need $1's for. We've pre-paid our gratituties already.

 

I'm really clueless about how many $1 bills I need to bring.

 

Is $25 ones sufficient? Do I need more like $50 in ones?

We bring $25....you will need to give a few bucks to the guy who takes your bag at the port, we tip $1 an item for room service up to $5 for the tray and a few buck to the guy that helps with our luggage after the cruise.

A lot also depends on if you are flying, shuttleing, etc. We fly in the day before and park in a off site lot so we tip the shuttle to the airport, tip the baggage handler at curb side, and tip the shuttle driver at the other end. The following day we once again tip the shuttle driver to the ship and then the porters at the port. Before we get on the ship it seems we have spent a small fortune in tips.

 

Once on the ship we tip our steward $5 a day (our preference, not necessary) and then a couple of $ each time we order room service.

 

In ports we tip tour guides, shuttle busses, waiters. ect.

 

I always start with 20 singles and 4 fives and then add to it throughout the week with change we get while shopping in port. They also have the new sail and sign kiosk on most ships now that will break down larger bills for you. If not, you can always get them changed to smaller bills in the casino or at the service desk.

 

Tipping is a personal thing though. Tip where and when you feel is appropriate. Enjoy your cruise and don't sweat the small stuff!

$25 for a 7 day cruise sounds about right.

 

We brought $100 for two 7 day cruises and returned with about $50 left.

You may consider bringing small bills if you are in a port shopping. If you are good at haggling for a better price try to make sure that you pay the exact agreed upon price because the vendor will try to give you change in the local currency.

Another Portland girl here ~ take more $1's then you think. It is not so much for tipping on the ship, but for off the ship. Food and drinks on the plane ~ I was a hit one flight because I had change for the stewardess. Tips for porters cabs maids ect before. In port smaller is better. If they see you bartering for an item then pull out a $20 no change for you. Also take a cross body bag. I have 2 great travel purses. E mail me if you need to borrow one:) pdxtender yahoo fill in the blanks. DH and I each left PDX with $50 in 1's each. We had to get change from the casino mid cruise for room service. With $1 you are also not flashing cash. They may take a bit more room, but worth having.. just in case.

You could go to the pursers desk/ guest services or the cashier in the casino to change large bills into any $$ you need. Or put a cash out on your S&S.

I usually take $50 for a 7 day cruise that includes flying to the port. That generally covers airport assistance, hotel shuttle and the guys who take your bags at the port.:)

We tip the porter $5.00 when we arrive to the terminal. We do self assist leaving the ship, so no tip needed there. Room service, we usually only do coffee, $2.00 each day.

That's pretty much it for tips. The rest are already taken care of. As someone else said, it is a good idea to have some smaller bills for shopping in the ports.

You may also want to consider $2 bills instead of singles. I like them because I never tip anyone less than $2, so it's fewer bills to carry.

Not a good idea. Even people working a Burger King think it's fake money.

 

And try buying something with them when you leave the states. You can't.

Depending on the port that you are going to there can also be a $1 charge for using a restroom. We usually carry $50 in ones.

I never understood the exact moment where people went from tipping stevedores when "hiring" them to move your bags, to simply taking them.

 

Some scam.

 

And our bags always make it on board.

Any ideas on how or we're we can change them for smaller notes including the $25-50 we will need for tips into $1 bills.

 

I have to say feels strange to have a dollar bill we have coins for anything less than $5 in Aussie land.

I am wagering the hotel front desk can help you out, break down a few bills.And the sip can help you as well. Have a restful flight. We plan on heading your way in a few years.

I usually get about $30-$40 in 1 dollar bills.

 

Going - We live about 10 minutes from the Philadelphia airport, and usually take a taxi, we tip the driver, extra if he's real nice and on time.

 

Airport - we check in at the counter. no tip there.

 

Luggage Claim - We tip a porter to take our luggage to a shuttle or taxi.

 

Taxi/Shuttle - We usually do a 2 night pre-cruise where ever we leave from we tip that driver.

 

Hotel porter - we tip (sometimes checking in and checking out-?)

 

Arriving at cruise terminal - those porters we tip.

 

Some tips are pre-paid on the ship

 

Room Service - we leave a stack of $1 bills just for that service - we if our kids are with us. some in their cabin and some in our cabin.

it means you can get your smuggled liquor on without a problem.

 

I have actually seen a few porters that grab your bags and go so fast you don't

have a chance to tip...amazing

I always bring 100 ones and a bunch of 5's and 10's. Great for tips and also we try to use only cash when on the islands/ports/etc. If you don't use it all, the bank will accept it back;)

I have no idea how much the porters make or why we tip them...but at $2 a bag, it's not worth my time to look into it further;)
