Designer jeans - the new cocktail dress

Recommended Posts

I wish...! Actually, I would bet on RCI, it would be fine... especially if paired with a cute (possibly embellished) top.

If you venture to try... let us all know how it is received! ;)

OK, so then I take it people generally don't wear jeans to dinner on any night? So does anyone wear jeans anywhere in the evening?

On RCCL.

I don't mind, it's just a question. I love my designer jeans but also love to dress up in nice gowns. I just don't want to look out of place!

We were on the Navigator in March... I DID wear jeans a couple of evenings to the shows and such. And, I wouldn't be surprised if there were people wearing them in the dining room, as well. You are young (judging from your photo...), so do what feels right for you! (As to an elder person in jeans... I think not!)

I don't think people will really be as judgemental as it might sound... wear what YOU feel comfortable in -- that is always the best rule! :)

That said... I think I might avoid jeans on FORMAL night! ;)

Have a wonderful honeymoon cruise!

Thanks!!!

I just read another post and there was a big discussion about jeans in the dining room and whether even dressed up jeans with a nice dressy top and fancy heels was considered ok and it seems it is not in the dining room at least, but I wouldn't mind wearing them to some shows and stuff. I have a bunch of cute jeans and heels and tops that I don't get to wear often enough since I don't go out that much (to bars anyway).

Thanks again!

Jeans, glam tops, and high heels are my dressy wardrobe. I have a love affair with jeans and besides the ever so comfy Seven, I'm into Paper, Denim, & Cloth, Chip & Pepper, DSquared, and Silver jeans.

What's the difference? Jeans are Jeans. Just because they have a signature on them, doesn't make them magic somehow.......

I say skip them.

I don't think it will be "fine" on RCI. I know a lot of frequent RCI cruisers that would say the same. I would think on Carnival it would be fine....

I agree with 1corona4u, jeans are jeans no matter what the label says. I personally don't think they belong in the dining room of ANY cruise ship. Changing into them after dinner is fine, but from what I've seen, jeans are not a common sight. My last RCI cruise, a woman actually wore a pair of black denim jeans for formal night. I just don't get it:confused:

I am an RCI cruiser and have rarely seen jeans in the dining room. They do state no jeans and being designer brand does not make them special.

Carnival and NCL are the only two lines where I have seen jeans at dinner and the NCL sailings were in Alaska.

Age is not an excuse for poor judgement. There are many well dressed young people aboard cruise ships.

And "comfortable" does not dictate what one should wear, IMHO. RCI requests no jeans in the dining room. I have seen some ships enforce that (hurrah to them!) and some unfortunately ignore it. And as for formal night, jeans are in very poor taste indeed.

Carnival does request in their daily caper "no blue jeans please" even on casual night.

Now it is true on Carnival you run into more of "I paid for my cruise and I will wear what I want" type of guys but the cruiseline as most does request no blue jeans.

Yes you see this on RCCL. But YOU are correct-RCCL also requests no blue jeans-but some reason there are always those few who do what they want anyway. I have seen these type of people on all the lines I have been on except HAL-even Princess and Disney had these guys-but there are more of these guys on Carnival.

I have also seen this is the newest trend or fad to wear jeans with super dressy tops and heels-maybe this is just a passing fad-time will tell whether this is accepted as the norm or not.

When I was a little girl-women hardly ever wore slacks unless it was to go bowling or some other type sport. Women even dressed in dresses to go to the grocery store. When we (girls) were first allowed to were slacks in high school (early 1970's) it had to be a "pantsuit" with the top covering your butt. We could not wear jeans. Very sexist wasn't it? As boy's butts were not covered by their shirts and they were allowed to wear jeans and ofcourse had been for many years.

Time has changed all that hasn't it? So at some point maybe jeans will be accepted but at this point of time it is frowned upon for dinner in the dinning room.

In defense of myself and the OP, jeans were never an option for the dining room on formal night...

And, with regard to age and poor judgement -- which I don't deny the well dressed younger set cruising -- my only purpose was to say that someone young with a good figure (say, below a size 8 -- although I know this will open a whole new can of worms! ) can look really cute in a pair of jeans with heels and a dressy top, where I would not want to see the same on an older, size 18 woman. If you need proof, crack open any current fashion magazine...

MCCASEY, you might better keep them away from the dining room... looks like tomatoes could be flying!

I have always worn jeans to dinner at least on the last night of the cruise. I pair them with a great top and shoes and the look is WONDERFUL!!!! Believe me you know what you can do with a pair of jeans to look good. I have seen plenty of people who think they are dressed nice in the dining room that I would put my jean look up against anytime. You can look smart and casual in jeans -

Wow! I had no idea that this question could become so heated and controversial. I am relatively new to cruising and I just wanted to know first, whether I could wear my cute jeans and stuff on casual nights in the dining room (in a dressy fashion) - i.e. whether it was acceptable and seen often enough. As a new cruiser, I would have no way of knowing if it's acceptable and done if I don't ask. The very fact that I am asking and not just doing it with no regard for what is acceptable or what is requested by the cruise line should show that I have every intention of respecting their rules and guidelines and do not want to stick out like a sore thumb. Once I read on another post, by accident, that it was clearly not acceptable and that the cruise lines actually specifically ask that no jeans be worn in the dining room ever, I was glad to know, but then changed my question to find out if jeans worn in that dressy fashion that is so in style right now are acceptable anywhere and at any time on the ship (i.e. shows, casino, on deck, etc. on casual nights or smart casual nights. I would never dream of wearing my jeans, desinger or not or dressy or not, on formal nights or even smart formal nights, to the dining room, but I was just wondering if I would still sitck out like a sore thumb if I wore them around the ship after dinner to the shows and stuff on non-formal nights. Still not sure what the answer to that is, but I assume it would be ok. But I would like to find out if it's not since, as I said, I do wish to respect the guidelines of the cruise line. I am not a young hooligan who has the attitude of "I paid for my cruise, I will wear what I want". It is the complete opposite. I am asking in order to avoid possibly portraying that misconception of myself. Since, as other's may agree, these days it is more and more chic and fashionable for young people to dress up a nice pair of jeans with nice heels and a nice top, I wanted to be sure that it was ok on the ship (again, not in the dining room). And I agree that just because someone is wearing jeans with a fancy name label on them or that cost more than the average pair at Walmart, doesn't mean they should be allowed to wear them to the dining room if the guideline says no jeans in the dining room, but I also think that there is a difference between someone wearing Walmart jeans and a swearshirt and someone wearing Seven or Rock & Republic or whatever jeans, cute heels and a cute dressy top around the ship to the shows or whatever.

Thanks for the feedback though! I am not trying to be rude and I am not offended by the responses I got, I just wanted to clarify what I was asking and tnat I would never go against the cruise lines guidelines as to dress code. That is precisely why I am asking before going!

So please, can we drop the dining room issue and can someone please let me know if on casual nights, it would be ok to walk around the nicer areas of the ship (shows, casino, etc.) in that type of outfit, or is that just not seen very often or not done or is it still against the guidelines? Same question for smart casual nights (it's hard for me to grasp the concept of smart casual as opposed to casual - so if someone wouldn't mind explaining it or giving me broad ideas of what is and is not acceptable for smart casual nights, I would appreciate it). As I said, I just need to know so that I can avoid breaking the rules or offending anyone.

mccasey, This topic always opens a can of worms, no matter what board you are posting to, so don't take any of what is written personal. There have been pages of arguments on every board here regarding dress code, the topic crops up every few weeks. For me, it does get a bit boring, as I have been on these boards longer than my sign in states and I have read every argument numerous times.

While almost every cruise line politely asks that jeans not be worn into the dining room every evening, you may see some people on every line wearing jeans. While I don't think they will throw you overboard, they may ask you to change. While they may be more acceptable in the disco after dinner, you may find jeans will be very hot in the Caribbean.

If I were young and skinny again, knowing what I know now, I would probably rather be wearing a short skirt or dress for evening onboard a ship. All in all, I would absolutely disagree with the statement "Designer jeans, the new cocktail dress", jeans are jeans, no matter what other type of material you top it with, or heeled shoes you are wearing. But, then again, I already did that very same thing in the 70's, during the disco rage. But we never considered it cocktail party wear, just what we wore to the discos. Now, at least for me, jeans are what I wear to work.

We all see different things in our minds eye, so you will have to consider what age group each of us are in. With all that said, you have to be comfortable in what you are wearing, if someone else has a problem with it, it is exactly that, their problem.

You will be amazed what you will see people wearing at night on the ship - to shows, casino, etc. There is a growing number of people who dress for dinner and then head up to their cabin to change into more comfortable/casual clothing. I think you should definitely bring your jeans and wear them. You will fit right in on my ships - granted I have only sailed Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Princess - I would think maybe on Holland America and Celebrity people may tend to stay dressed up more as I think the average age is slightly older - I am not trying to offend anyone with this statement but I do think that older people tend to be more traditional than younger folks.

The cruiselines ask you not to wear jeans in the dining room. It would be rude to wear them against the rules. People do rude things all the time but just because I see others do it does not mean I should. If the rules state "no jeans" then it does not hurt me to follow them.

mccasey.. Very simple answer.. Wear your jeans anywhere you want on the first and last night of your cruise (you get to wear what you are boarding/leaving the ship with). On the remaining days/nights anywhere you want except for the evening dining rooms unless you plan to eat in the buffet.

I just wanted to chime in because I've seen the dress code issue done to death. There are some folks who think cargo pants or zip off pants are okay because they're not jeans or shorts. They aren't any more dressy than a nice pair of jeans with heals and a nice top- as a matter of fact, I consider them super casual.

As far as jeans are jeans. I must disagree with that. A pair of Levi's 501's is not the same as a pair of high end, well tailored and stylishly cut jeans. The silhouette is much more sleek and "dressy" and can be dressed up with the right accessories, top and shoes.

I'm not arguing if it's right or wrong to wear them in the dining room. No jeans means no jeans. I just saying that by quoting the dress code to the letter, we're actually leaving room for a more casual look(like wind pants, cargo pants) than what the OP was planning on wearing.

Well, gee, as a almost 37 year old with a curvy size 14 to 16 figure, I'd have to disagree. One of my husband's favorite looks on me are when I'm wearing my jeans with fancy heels and an embellished top or sweater. I frankly think this look is better on someone with a few curves than the usual Hollywood lollipops with their skinny limbs, and oversized heads.

You will see jeans after dinner and at many other times all throughout the ship. I am sure you will be quite comfortable at the casino, shows, etc. in your jeans.

I am one of those who cannot fathom wearing jeans in the Caribbean but them I like to wear pretty clothes and do not find jeans particularly feminine.

Then again, I am a size 8 and mid forties , not "under a size eight" and "young" so I guess I shouldn't be wearing them anyway!

Aaahahahahahah Ahahahhahah.......so true!!! I think women with curves look better, but then I am a woman. So what do I know... I am not over weight,(size 8) but have curves, and even though I am not always happy with my body, I much prefer to not look like a twig. :)

Women with a little weight on them also tend to stave off the look of their age.(it's a fact, look it up:)....wrinkles fill out better) While I am 47(soon to be 48) most people guess me for 30-something. That, I can live with. So there are good things about not being a rail.

As for the age vs looking "cute" in your jeans, I have no desire to be "cute". I was "cute in my teens and 20's.

Pretty or beautiful please for me.....;) ...in my smart casual and formal wear, which does not include jeans, designer or otherwise. Denim is denim. Like they say, you can dress up a sow's ear as a silk purse, but it's still a sow's ear.:D
