jdarch Posted May 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2012 With two cruise ships arriving tomorrow morning, the BIU (Bermuda Industrial Union) has scheduled a meeting for 10:30 am that will halt bus service - for over two hours . With the all their concerns about lagging tourism ( and the screw-ups last year), they can't come up with a better time? Sounds like the Union wants to flex their muscle inspite of the result. We love Bermuda, but sometimes it seems their powers that be can't get out of their own way. Unfortunate this is allowed to happen. http://bernews.com/2012/05/bus-service-to-stop-for-2-hours-tomorrow/
njhorseman Posted May 29, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 29, 2012 At least this work stoppage is being held in order to vote on the proposed work schedule...something that's been in the works forever and really needs to be resolved before bus schedules can be revised (they've been virtually unchanged for a decade). A couple of weeks ago, bus service was halted for a couple of hours because of a BIU meeting on their contract dispute with KFC, of all things. What's really sad is that the head of BIU was recently appointed to the tourism board. You can tell how much he cares about tourism. Note: the meeting is being held today, Tuesday 5/29, not Wednesday...so it doesn't affect the Wednesday ship arrivals. The Veendam arrives today, but the buses should be back in service by then. Hopefully, cruisers currently in Bermuda on the Dawn and Enchantment, both departing today, will make it back to their ships in time for sailing. jdarch Posted June 1, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted June 1, 2012 Add insult to injury: apparently this morning a surprise rally had most of the BIU drivers parading out front of KFC on Queen Street. I'm sure another mrning of missed transit is making the islanders real fans of the Union... http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20120601/NEWS/120609998
