cornflake girl Posted June 6, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2012 About a month ago HAL announced that they had designed a new vegetarian menu. Does anyone know whether this has been implemented on the ships yet? If so, do you have to request it the day before and make your choice or just ask for it when you sit down to eat? Thanks. euro cruiser Posted June 6, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 6, 2012 I was on the Rotterdam last week and there are vegetarian options (identified as "gourmet vegetarian") offered in each section of the menu. I don't know if they were different from last year, I guess I didn't pay that much attention, but everything was good. One night the vegetarian entree (some nights there were two different veggie entrees, other nights only one) was Italian, another night Indian, etc.

It isn't just the one veggie option for each course that they offer now but a whole menu apparantly: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/holland-america-line-now-serves-a-new-vegetarian-only-alternative-menu-2012-05-
SwissMyst Posted June 6, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2012 I am not a vegetarian, but find myself ordering more and more of these options mainly because they sound so good and have not been disappointed.
euro cruiser Posted June 6, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 6, 2012 They didn't offer a special menu to me and they knew I was vegetarian (the waiter mentioned it at dinner the first night, wanting to know which of us was the vegetarian).

glomarrone Posted August 28, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 28, 2013 If HAL is reading these posts, I'd like to know how I can access the new vegetarian menu online? If anyone can help me, please let me know. A big thumb's up to HAL for doing this. Gloria

It was shown outside the MDR next to the "regular" menu. I'm assuming when you are seated you can ask for the vegetarian menu. My kids weren't with me so I ate carnivore. I did tell them about the menu and suggested they cruise HAL next time.
glomarrone Posted August 29, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Thanks, Amy! I copied it and printed it out. My husband will really appreciate it as he has to limit his protein. This helps him out quite a bit. :) Gloria
glomarrone Posted August 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Thanks for the phone number. I'll give them a call closer to our sailing date. Happy to read that you have too many cruises to list. My next cruise will be my 39 & 40 - a B to B. Happy sailing! :) Gloria

I wonder if that means you no longer have to order it the night before. We don't eat dinner in the MDR every evening, and don't want to have to make that decision in advance, so I have never had the opportunity to order from the vegetarian menu. I have always enjoyed the vegetarian entrees on the regular menu, however.
vbmom87 Posted August 29, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 29, 2013 The Zuiderdam had the one vegetarian course on the menu but no special vegetarian menu, in May. You typically have to request the special vegetarian menu. At least you did in the past.
ChiSloop Posted August 30, 2013 #16 Share Posted August 30, 2013 I am on the Zaandam right now and have ordered from the vegetarian menu listed above all week. I asked for the vegetarian menu the first night and have ordered for the following night each evening. The food has been excellent!
sppunk Posted August 30, 2013 #17 Share Posted August 30, 2013 I've been able to order a vegetarian menu entree same-night (the curry is very good), but haven't tried anything else. As always YMMV greatly.
woodworker&knitter Posted August 30, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 30, 2013 We did a few b2b March to May on the Zaandam and Statendam. My husband got an actual vegetarian menu each night to pre order for the next evenings dinner as he has a citrus allergy and while we cruise he eats vegetarian. There is also a vegetarian meal on the regular MDR menu every night.
