tighe Posted June 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2012 We are sailing on Radiance from Seward to Vancouver in late July early August. Any suggestions for a private fishing vender/or general info would be helpful. First question: should we go with a charter, e.g. $200-300 p/p or is there a "party boat" fishing option, with say 30 people like in flordia? Next: is there land fishing(not fly fishing) or pier fishing? thanks for any help!!
rt1092 Posted June 29, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 29, 2012 Went on a ship excursion to fish for salmon (Ketchican). I was extremely lucky I actually caught one. The only one. When we got off the ship in Seward we drove to Homer went on a part charter for Halibut 5 people on board. I went on the worst day of the month (tidewise) But for the 2 hours or so we could hold bottom. We caught halibut non stop I probably caught 15 to 20. Nothing big all under 20 pounds. But the high lite of my stay there was fishing from shore at the homer spit. There is a crab processing plant that pumps the parts they don't use into the water. And the fish congergate to feed on this. At low tide you can cast to this spot. And catch flounder and cod up to 6 or 7 pounds as fast as you can get the line in the water. The tackle shop rents rods for this.

Most of our boats in Southcentral Alaska (Seward, Homer) don't do up to 30. Most of them do what we call a 6 pack (so 6 at a time). Not really anything fly fishing that you could get to from Seward unless you had a car and there is really no pier but what we term docks down there and since most people have their boats there, there isn't too much public fishing, though they do fish off the beach. But, you would need your own equipment as well as a license. Don't get caught fishing without a license, or you'll be paying the State of Alaska a very nice fee! pspercy Posted June 30, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 30, 2012 There's Salmon & bottom fishing out of Ketchikan (and maybe Juneau). Royal and =X= offered fly-out flyfishing out of Juneau in 2010 (expensive). Icy Strait also shows both fresh and saltwater fishing. http://www.icystraitpoint.com/Plan/Excursion/27/Stream-Fishing
donaldsc Posted June 30, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2012 We did a party boat of about 20 people out of Homer. Each of us caught our 2 halibut limit with weights ranging from 20 lbs to 50 lbs. It was a lot of fun. I should point out that in some parts of AK, the halibut limit is 1 fish. In Homer it is 2 fish. DON
fisherguy Posted June 30, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2012 The last couple of times I cruised to Ketchikan, I fished at Ketchikan creek just below the orange bridge that goes through town. Both times were in mid august when the pink salmon were running. Hooked into lots of fish and all it cost me was a day license. There used to be a store right next to the bridge that rented poles and sold licences and I heard that a new store was built there. Good luck!
