How early to book excursions ?

We are cruising Princess to Hawaii in April 2013. From any CC member experiences, when did you start booking excursions from Private Companies. Even though we've read great reviews of quite a few places, and as much as we wish we were cruising now, it seems we should wait until 6 months out - November. Anybody found a great excursion and then ooops too late.

Thanks for input and happy Independence Day

We booked a private tour in Maui 8 months out because he is a one-man-company and we knew we wanted him :D. Booked 2 others 4-5 months out, (One of them with the cruise line).

Basically we just booked as soon as we decided what we wanted to do and which company we wanted to go with. We will be there in late October 2012 and have one tour left to book. :)

We figure, why wait? We have had tours that we have wanted to go on that have been sold out and we wished we had started looking for tour earlier. We always book as soon as we find the tours we like, that way we always get what we want and we aren't disappointed.
