Shirley and Les Posted May 14, 2005 #1 Share Posted May 14, 2005 When flushed, do toilets swirl clockwise in both the northern and the southern hemispheres? Similarly, is the swirl clockwise for both the eastern and the western hemisphere? We are taking a norhtbound Alaskan cruise starting June 17, 2005 on the Celebrity 'Summit' and want to know whether we should push down or pull up on the toilet handle when flushing. To answer, please get over to the Celebrity "Connections" board and sign up for our party. And now!!!! And now, I know you couldn't wait" "Did we suck you in on this thread????" Les PS My DW, Shirley, disavows any connection with this post
asylver1 Posted May 14, 2005 #2 Share Posted May 14, 2005 Ha ha! Wish I was on your cruise! Good one...made me think, though!
Bollinge Posted May 14, 2005 #3 Share Posted May 14, 2005 Toilets on the newer ships don't swirl. The water is sucked down the bog before it has a chance to make up its mind which way to go!
ocngypz Posted May 14, 2005 #4 Share Posted May 14, 2005 They SWOOSH onboard ships. However, yes, water "downunder" does swirl the opposite way from the Northern Hemisphere.
Leela Posted May 14, 2005 #5 Share Posted May 14, 2005 This is actually an urban legend. See the article at snopes.com for details. :)
