Life Jackets when snorkeling?

We are going on the Silvermoon. Do you know when you are snorkeling that is a requirement for all to wear life jackets while snorkeling? We were in Cancun and Cozumel last year and we were required to wear them. My brother in law is experienced diver and it made him upset that he had to wear a life jacket. Thanks for any help.

I don't remember life jackets being required when we sailed with them in April.

We were required to wear inflatable life jackets on the silver moon earlier this year. I believe they're required on all snorkling trips (at least all that I've been on) for safety reasons.

 

Your brother in law could easily let all of the air out of the jacket so that it wouldn't make him float.

The area where the shipwrecks are is high traffic, so you are required to wear a lifejacket to make you more visible to the boats. We wore the jackets at the turtle spot, too. Just seemed to make it easier to float without flailing your legs around. It's easy to kick the turtles if you're moving your legs to stay afloat. All you have to do is put your face in the water and they will come close enough to touch their backs. Even got some great face-to-face pictures as they swam towards me. No fins are allowed to prevent injuries to the turtles.
