roe2ship Posted May 10, 2013 #6001 Share Posted May 10, 2013 Smoking is NOT permitted in elevators. I have not read that moving a lounger is similarly restricted... ;) I am a non-smoker, though fully accept it as part of virtually all casinos, NCL included. Regarding the smoking (assuming it's going to be permitted) in the waterfront dining area, I'd guess that most non-smokers do not care to sit near someone who is smoking. I know that we fall into that category. It is unfortunate that this new concept of cruise ship dining can't be enjoyed equally by smokers and non-smokers, as the latter's experience may be negatively impacted by the fact that smoking is permitted. Yes, non-smokers are free to dine inside. They're also free to dine outside as long as they don't mind second hand smoke. It is what it is, and it's NCL's call. Tom Most smokers are considerate. It's the ones who suggest blowing smoke in the face of non-smokers who give smokers, in general, a negative image. Tom I’m aware of that….that comment is sought of tongue in cheek. Bottom line, there are many things in life that I would hope people do not need to see a set rules/restrictions on paper….I believe most people do have common sense and courtesy. It’s the small minority that actually will do whatever they want because its “their” vacation and they paid big bucks for their vacation. They show zero consideration for others yet yell the loudest when something is NOT to their liking. It’s the "all about me" attitude. For the record, I am a non-smoker. I understand the reasonable comments on both sides of the debate. With that said, I really can’t stand when the “non smokers” complain that a smoker is bothering them in an area that they have every right to be. SliceOfLife Posted May 10, 2013 #6002 Share Posted May 10, 2013 Wow, I didn't know this was the Everything Smoking Thread! Lets move on from this subject. For those sailing on 5/12, I hope you have a wonderful time!!

It just gets under many non-smokers skin that they can't enjoy all parts of the ship (or places in general) owing to the behavior of a few, certainly not all, addicts. boyreporter Posted May 10, 2013 #6004 Share Posted May 10, 2013 With apologies to the let's-move-on people ... there's really not much going on here, so my two cents shouldn't take up any valuable real estate. Feel free to skip if not interested in the great smoking controversy. I don't think a vocal opponent like Joeski is entitled, or feels entitled. I think he's trying to carve out his space in a situation where the world isn't forming itself the way he feels it should. I definitely agree with the people saying let's wait and see what it's actually like on the ship (although that flies in the face of the essence of this thread :)). But if NCL neglected to announce or enforce that smokers should give diners a little room, I don't believe non-smokers should have to choose between 'dealing with it' or heading inside. And I suspect smokers (if not smoker defenders) who argue as much are seeing the world through smoker-colored glasses. I bet NCL doesn't have rules against body odor on the ship, but if I shelled out for Ocean Blue and were upwind of someone stinky, I wouldn't think that fair, and I don't think I'd be 'feeling entitled' for feeling that way. Just like if you worked third shift and I lived downstairs/next door and liked to play loud music while you were trying to sleep; you wouldn't be 'feeling entitled' to sleep, you'd just want to sleep and think it unfair that you couldn't. The ideal situation is the one that probably plays itself out 99 times out of 100: smokers who are courteous enough to give diners a little room (and, maybe 70 percent of the time, non-smokers who decide the smokers aren't putting thm out sufficiently for them to make an issue of it). But I don't think the Joeskis of the world are obligated to endure the 100th just to honor the good intentions of the other 99. I also think some smokers don't understand how the smoke affects some non-smokers. I'll go downstairs with a coworker and stand next to him and talk to him while he smokes (by the entrance of the building, where people have to pass to come in; another instance where the rules aren't sufficient). Maybe it doesn't bother me so much because I have smoked occasionally. My wife, meanwhile, hates smelling smoke on people's clothes/hair when they come back from a break. It's easy to say non-smokers should 'deal with it' when 'it' is something you like, not something that bothers you as much as it does some others. Ctrinh225 Posted May 10, 2013 #6005 Share Posted May 10, 2013 I'm gonna ask a question to get off the other subject. What hotel that has been either newly renovated or brand new that s like under 400 on a Saturday nite?? Should I take a taxi or car service from LGA?? Anyone stayed at Marriott Marquis Times Square or the Conrad?? These seems price right..but any other suggestions r good. Just want something clean and convenient to the pier. Thank u in advance. SteveH2508 Posted May 10, 2013 #6006 Share Posted May 10, 2013 So - to summarise the last several hundred posts or so... The balconies are too small - some people smoke - some people don't like smoking. No-one has complained that their balcony is too small to get away from the smoke but I guess it is only a matter of time... Nothing new to see here folks - let's move on. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Love the Marriott Marquis! Had a room with reward points before our cruise on Gem in September. Got upgraded to a larger room with view of Times Square at check-in. :) The room was nicely furnished, very clean, and HUGE by NYC standards. I understand the higher rooms on the other side of the building look out toward the Intrepid Museum and the pier. Should be able to have a view of the ship when she comes in. I needed a few things before we got on the ship and ordered them online through Food Emporium on 43rd Street. Everything was delivered right on time, just a little hiccup on the hotel's end. There are shops galore along this stretch of Times Square in case you forget something - like your makeup bag as I did! You can also see the GMA windows from the Times Square side. Always have to laugh at the "take it somewhere else" or "let's move on" posts. ;) Also, it's not just a matter of just "heading inside". There are dining venues with tables outside. Someone should be able to enjoy their meal without smoke in their face! If I were dining with my family, and someone was standing there smoking, I would very politely ask them to either move or put it out. <shrug> Anyone with an iota of class would comply! As for the smell in their hair and clothes, I really don't think they realize how bad they smell. I used to wash my hands, spray perfume, and chew gum after smoking, and my friends still complained. It wasn't until I quit myself that I realized exactly how nasty of a smell stale smoke is!
