Thinking about the Regal Princess . . .

We are thinking about the Regal Princess in October (girls trip :D ) but I never seem to hear much about it. It will be doing the Mexican Riviera out of San Diego - a port I have never been to. I know that it has only traditional dining - I love Personal Choice but I am sure that I can handle it to be away for 10 days :p . Would love to know what you think about the ship? entertainment? home port - easy access?

Also I have been watching for sales and Princess e-mails but the Regal is rarely mentioned, even for current sailing. I know it is to early for October's sailing but is this a popular ship that fills up quickly? or because it is older do people tend to wait and see what is available.

Any feedback or advice?

Joanne - The Regal is a very popular ship! She is a smaller very classy ship that many feel is more traditional than the new "mega-ships". You will find alot of reviews on the Regal if you scroll through the pages or use the seach feature. Look for BDJAM's review his is the best on the Regal. I hope you choose her she is a beauty.

Thanks for the mention – I’ve added the link below to the review I did last August after a 10 day Alaska sailing on her.

As far as Personal Choice dining, Regal Princess only has Traditional seating in the dining room, however the Café Del Sol houses a Bistro from 7:00 p.m. which according to ship mates was every bit as good as the dining room. She also has a sit-down (not counter style service) pizzeria and the Café is open 24 hours for buffet. And don’t forget room service…so you don’t have to be tied to the dining room if you don’t want to be.

Regal Princess is a great ship - have been on her twice, and booked on her again, 'round the Horn, Mar 06.

If Personal Choice dining is very important for you, Regal Princess is probably not your ship. She does offer a recently remodelled dining room (1999 or 2000), which seems roomier than its original design, and the ambient noise levels were greatly reduced.

She is a very nice size, easy to get around on, and still has a dedicated cinema, a feature eliminated on the newer ships in the fleet.

There are those of us who prefer a more traditional experience, and Regal Princess does fit that need.

Hi, we were on the Regal this March for 15 days thru the Panama Canal ,west to east. We had a wonderful time, but I did miss personal choice dining, we were on 2nd seating and would have preferred 1st seating but it was full, but that being said we still had a good time.

However you do need to consider that the Regal is one of the older ships in the fleet, and doesn't have all the new things that the newer ships do. One thing, if you are interested in a bigger gym workout area, this ship only has a small one (but well equiped) in the bottom of the ship and no windows . Another thing to consider on the Mexican Rivera cruise is the pools , the Regals pools are both on the top deck right next to each other with a bar inbetween, there is not a pool in a enclosed or covered area on this ship. The pools are all one depth, with no splash over area like the newer ships have, and climb down ladder entrance and exit only. I don't know if any of this makes any difference to you or not , just mentioning it so you know. The Regal does have a nice movie theater , that shows movies every afternoon and evening, and that is nice. It has some nice lounges and bars, a nice pizza restaurant, the casino is on the top bow area with a great view. Hope this helps.

Joanne1,

I have just found this review of the Regal Princess. We are going on her in January and like you I had not heard much about her until I started going back to old reviews on this Board. She sounds a lovely ship and we are looking forward to the cruise.

Hi,

I am new to the board and want to try it out. I hope all the good things I have read about the Regal are true as we are booked on the January 06 Antarctic Cruise. I personally can't wait. Has anyone been on a Princess Antarctic cruise before? What is it like, what are the highlights and what excursions are a must?

First of all welcome to the Board. Have you seen our Roll Call for the cruise. If not please come and join us. Here is the link: :)

If you go to that link and read back a couple of entries there is another link to a wonderful summary of an Antarctic cruise taken earlier this year. Also look up South America in the Ports section. There are quite a few postings there about previous cruises.

We look forward to meeting up with you in January. ;) ;)

Thanks to everyone for their comments and links to other reviews - bdjam's review was very informative. Not having a cruise booked is killing me, think I had better do something about it . . . was thinking of the October 6th sailing.

Regal (& her twin the Crown) are my favorite Princess ships! I just LOVE them! Too bad they sold the Crown a few years ago..........:(

I love their layout (it's easy to get around) and I think that size ship is jsut right for me. I don't like the big, mega-ships.
