Mary Ellen1 Posted September 20, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2012 Hi -- quick Q: for my "trip cost" do I include port taxes & fees, or just the cruise fare? I'm thinking it's just cruise fare, since that's the non-refundable part, right? DH & I are flying his Cessna to the port, so we don't' have non-refundable commercial airfare to worry about. But is there anything in a policy to cover a mechanical problem with the plane? Or, possibly, car troubles if we wind up driving (due to weather or something)? Thanks, insurance experts! I appreciate your help. :)
sirwired Posted September 20, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2012 Insurance definitely does not cover anything related to air transportation on anything other than commercial service. If one of the insured is flying or assisting of the flying of the plane, all claims are explicitly excluded. If somebody else (not an insured) is doing the flying, most of the coverage relating to air transportation only covers Common Carriers, but you WOULD be covered for, say, injuries sustained in an accident. (This is so people taking air tours can still receive accident coverage.) Generally, you'll only be covered for auto transportation issues if you have an accident on the way to your departure. Breakdown, jams, road closures, etc. are not covered. The reason they don't cover breakdowns should be obvious: it'd be an easy way to cancel a trip for an otherwise uncovered reason; sabotaging a car is a trivial matter. When I buy trip interruption it includes auto problems as well.

Sabotaging a car -- yikes! People will try anything. Cruise fare includes all port & government taxes. So, the cruise fare isn't just the cruise fare? Aren't the taxes & fees refundable, if you had to cancel? Reason I ask is that we got a fare of $499 pp for the cruise, and the insurance bumps up to a higher price bracket if I add the port taxes & fees (which are about $110 pp). Would I have problems if I insured just the $499? And what insurance covers auto problems? That seems to contradict what sirwired said, above...

Check with your TA or with the cruise line but in general, the taxes and fees ARE refundable so don't need to be insured. re: the car situation the poster is from Canada and they have very different coverages up there. For a US-based insurer, what Sirwired posted is correct. Although some plans will cover road closures due to inclement weather that are documented by the local highway patrol or state road people. You would have to show that there was no available alternative route to get you there on time.

That's what I'd thought -- the port fees & taxes would definitely be refunded if you had to cancel. Thanks for clarifying. AND, thanks for pointing out the Canada thing... Different situation. Thanks, all, for your help. I got the insurance from the big Club store from whom I bought the cruise. Really reasonable rates on the insurance -- a TravelGuard policy. "Like." :D

WOW..I did not know that....I booked solo casino "free" cruise (but nothing is really free:D)..and half the "actual" cost is fees and taxes.... BUT --NCL listed deposit as $250...and according to their invoice...if I cancel...I would loose deposit... So maybe I should get insurance...????????????? Kamloops50 Posted September 21, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2012 I buy insurance to cover the cruise fare after the final payment . trip interruption that I buy (in Canada ) is the same one you can buy in the US.
klfrodo Posted September 21, 2012 #9 Share Posted September 21, 2012 trip interruption that I buy (in Canada ) is the same one you can buy in the US. It could be the same policy by name, but the coverage could be vastly different. Here in the US, coverages could be vastly different as to inclusions, exclusions, or definitions of terms based on the State of my residency.
