Educate me Stateroom vs cabin

Okay out of habit we call the rooms we sleep in our cabins but they are actually Staterooms. So what is a cabin? and what is a Stateroom?

That's like when one of my cruising friends give me h*** when I call the ship a boat. There are just some things that sound better.....
