Has anyone ever triedto upgrade from a ocean view to a balcony when checking in on the day of saling

For NCL your chances are slim to none because most sailings are full. And even if you try when on board they will have a sign posted at reception that there are no cabins available or something to that effect.

 

If you want a balcony then watch what is available after final payment and see if you can upgrade.
