rock collecting

On our Alaska cruise (Spirit 6-25-2005) I was hoping to do some rock collecting (primarily for polishing). Anyone else do any rock hounding on cruises? Any good places?

Our gold mine tour guide said the Juneau beaches are good to pan for gold. The discard from the mining operation went there, and a lot of the gold they just didn't extract. I personally liked Seward beaches at low tide. I wasn't looking to collect, per se, but just got intrigued with the intertidal zone.
