Alan Posted May 7, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2004 Which shore excursions would you recommend in the above ports. We'd prefer nothing more strenuous than hiking, and we are not necessarily looking for bargains. We just want to get the most out of our time in port. Thanks to all for your help!!!! dustyroad Posted May 9, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 9, 2004 balanceok is right. a whale watching tour is a must and capt.larry with orca is the best. do a flight seeing tour ( plane or helicopter ),take a fishing excursion, see the bears on a tour, ride the railroad to white pass summit, raft, go eagle watching or any one of a number of great tours or walking jonts. make sure you go the red dog saloon in juneau and have a real alaskan beer. there are alot of post here on the alaska thread that will give you lots of info on what to do and the best tour group. have a great time and you wont have any trouble finding something you will like to do. jstducky Posted June 9, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 9, 2004 juneau - definitely do whale watching. this is probably the best place to see wildlife. also the mt. roberts tram is a good sightseeing thing to do, you get a good view from the top looking down. unfortunately, i tried to do a search for a website for the tram and couldn't find one. also juneau is a nice city to just walk around the shopping area. stop in at the red dog saloon. skagway - definitely the white pass railroad. also if you ship offers excursions over to haines (about a 30 minute ferry) take advantage of that as haines is a quaint little city as well. finally, this might also be a good city for glacial flight seeing. there is a helicopter operator that operates right off the pier.... also walk around town and stop at the red onion saloon ketchikan - there is a totem pole village which is intersting. you can see an actual totem pole being carved. take a walk to creek street (the red light district) and see Dolly's house. also for something fun and entertaining, go to the lumberjack show (buy this one directly at the box office rather than the ship... its less than a 5 minute walk from the pier) whatever you do, just enjoy alaska! jstducky! ----------------- ...til 9/04 - Jewel of the Seas - Canada / New England ==================================== ...til 7/04 - Zuiderdam - Western Caribbean ===================================== 7/03 - Zaandam - Alaska 4/03 - Norweigan Star - Hawaii 7/96 - Noordam - Alaska 7/96 - Golden Princess - Alaska 8/94 - Jubilee - Mexican Riviera

dbcecil Posted June 14, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Ditto (to the letter) balanceok's recommendation (Captain Larry's, White Pass Railroad - we took the bus back down so we could stop and take pictures, and Misty Fjords). We did booked all of these back in '02 and only regret the fact that the Misty Fjords flightseeing got canceled (rain). My wife just ended up with more jewelry because we went shopping in Ketchikan instead. Have fun.
CruiseNut7 Posted June 14, 2004 #11 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Juneau - Capt. Larry's whale watching on the Awesome Orca, as suggested by several others. Skagway - Temsco Helicopter flight to the top of Denver Glacier. http://www.temscoair.com/ Exciting flight, walked on the glacier -- for us, a once in a lifetime trip we will never forget. kerryg Posted June 20, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 20, 2004 Skagway has a National Park Service office/museum. They provide free guided tours of the city, which we enjoyed. We also liked Liarsville (you've gotta have a sense of humor) and Totem Bight in Ketchikan.
mariakitty Posted June 21, 2004 #14 Share Posted June 21, 2004 We just returned from the Norwegian Spirit and the highlight of the cruise of the Tracy Arm Fjord tour. It was 5 hours, and we saw humpback whales, orca, porpoises, seals, bald eagles, mountain goats, just to name a few! You can save a lot of cash by booking excursions off the ship (many can be booked in advance directly with tour company). For example, NCL charged us $99 for the White Pass railway in Skagway, and we could have booked with for $39 at the pier that day with a bonus city tour included.
