flyguy Posted May 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2004 Can anyone tell me how difficult -or easy to get to the Galveston port? I'll be going south on I-45 to Houston to sail on the Celebrity Galaxy. From the looks of Mapquest, it won't be difficult but those folks won't be in the seat next to me only my GPS (wife). I thank you in advance, John
springtxbill Posted May 20, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2004 Just keep going on 45 to Galveston, over the causeway (watch your speed on it). first exit (Harborside Drive. Left under freeway about 4 to 5 miles and you will be there. Bill D RCCL Song of Norway 7/79? flyguy Posted May 20, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted May 20, 2004 Thanks for the quick reply. I bid on a 12 day to Panama on the Galaxy and won $367.00 plus port fees. Now I'm getting happy!

flyguy Posted May 20, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted May 20, 2004 The website is Skyauction.com and the port fees were $274 each plus the fare 369 each for a total of $1,282. I did buy trip insurance for 98.00 that is offered on the site just in case... This will be a fairly cheap trip since we'll drive to Galveston from Oklahoma. The last big trip we took was on the Carnival Spirit (that we bought from Skyauction) departing from Vancouver BC and we couldn't drive so it was costlier. Anyway when you go to that website, click on winners and you'll see what the fares have been going for and then "test the water" Good luck and happy sailing! (Hope this makes sense)

LindaKE Posted May 22, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 22, 2004 I didn't know such a site exists. Does anyone know if it has a good track record? Do you need to go someplace like biddingfortravel to learn about the ideosyncracies before you bid? Nitemare Posted May 22, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 22, 2004 Skyauction can be a terrific place to get a bargain on a cruise or other travel. There's a ton of fine print, though, and sometimes you can win something and it turns out they don't have rooms available, or the port charges and taxes can be huge. It also helps if you can drive yourself to the pier, as these are often last minute type deals which make airfares VERY high. If you Google "Skyauction" you'll find tons of info, both good and bad. flyguy Posted May 23, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted May 23, 2004 I've used Skyauction before and the wife and I were both very happy with them. On the other hand, we've used a travel agent and can't say the same. If they don't have a roo/cabin available this time, maybe the cruise line will refund our money and/or upgrade us on a future sailing. Amnyone else use Skyauction before? LindaKE Posted May 23, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 23, 2004 Thanks. This is very interesting. I'm not wild of Carnival, but Mobile (my home town) is a new homeport for them. If we can get a really good price through skyauction, we can go without worrying about airline tickets. I think I could make do with Carnival if I can cruise more often. D97062262 Posted May 25, 2004 #11 Share Posted May 25, 2004 When are you sailing on the Galaxy ? We are booked on the Dec. 6 cruise for the Panama Canal. Getting to the port of Galveston is easy from I-45 South. You will see signs that direct you to the port.
D97062262 Posted May 25, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 25, 2004 I see where you sailed in December on RCCL. How did you like sailing in December? We are booked on Galaxy out of Galveston on Dec. 6. springtxbill Posted May 26, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 26, 2004 The cruise we took went one way down to Aruba, so it should be similar to your trip to Panama as far as the weather is concerned. It was a little cool the irst day and the seas were high as it was just after a very strong cold front. By the second day the weather had warmed and was great for the rest. The ship rode the seas very good as we were pretty much going with them. It had really been rough the day before coming into Galveston as there was salt all over the deck 4 railings, etc. This was probably the worst case weather situation as I mentioned it was a very strong front. I like the December sailings better than in the summer as it is warm enough and not down right hot. Bill D RCCL Song of Norway 7/79?
