Ashdod to Jerusalem: Road Conditions?

I read there has been a lot of construction on the highway from Ashdod to Jerusalem, and that there is only one route....and that it was "continuing". Can someone local give an update on the situation? We are docking one day in January and are debating using the ship's tour vs independent....would hate to miss the ship on an independent tour because of road delays!!

And for some reason many locals like to have protests that also block the roads in and around Jerusalem. They had one the last time we made the trip. Luckily we took a ships tour and while we got back a little late, they held the ship. So just plan accordingly.

We docked in Ashdod in October and had no road/construction problems. We were on a private tour (GTI)and were back to the ship in due time.

We recently (early November) drove from Ashdod to Jerusalem and didn't encounter any major road construction problems/delays. But the traffic around Jersualem was awful!
